...to add to bywarren's comment, Taca can be REALLY strict in terms of enforcing weight limits... It's sort of hit or miss depending on who you get at the counter, but we've had bags tagged "oversize" that were an inch over the combined linear total or 1/2 pound too heavy. They still got on the plane, but for a price. And don't expect your oversize bag to show up w/ you, as they're shipped standby... Taca makes you sign a release, the fine print of which says they have something like 5 or 7 days to get the bag to you... Also don't count on quickly re-packing everything into your carry-on either, as the weight limit for carry-on's is 20lbs. Last, if you pack your things in a "non-suitcase" container (EX: those rubbermaid bins) don't be surprised if it gets put on the plane classified as "luggage" and offloaded the plane classified as "cargo", throwing a wrench into the gears of your customs-clearing experience. (BTW, all this said, we've had VERY good experiences for the most part on Taca, having flown with them a half dozen times.)

Yes, I cannot picture waking up in the morning and having my challenge for the day being to find out if I could take dog food on the plane, but if I did, I guess I would just call the airline, get my question answered and spend the rest of the day unchallenged. smile

Barbara: you do have my curiousity aroused, what a way to start the day, I was talking with both American and Taca as recently as yesterday and was informed the weight allowance was still 70lbs. What info do you have? Thanks, By

I have an idea rent the whole plane fill it full of dog food and you will never have to worry again, and best of all the weight allowances and restrictions would be waived

It looks like Belize might have a cargo plane for charter soon. She just needs to make sure the plane has been cleaned good. We wouldn't want the dogs sniffing any left over cargo and getting high other than altitude wise. laugh

Of course if she took your advice and also filled it up with dog food, the dogs would have no problem with the munchies. wink

No, I'm not kidding. Randa..9 yrs., needs a "prescription" dog food. It is not found in Belize, but found some hook ups in Guatemala and Mexico. Science Diet C/D...it acidifies urine,. I'm an animal lover..what can I say?? For those with information-thank you!! Plan on bringing a 40 lb. bag with, but need to make arrangements for future. Miss A....I kept your email about the "dog food" runs to states and have contacted them..THANK YOU!! Is this my daily "challenge"...nope....but wish it were!! frown

makes sense now why you want to lug around that 40 lb. bag, Cheri. It may be worthwhile to call the airlines as suggested, and explain that you must bring this with you, and it has to arrive with you as your luggage. See what they have to say. Maybe one of the stores could special order it for you in the future. Good luck!

An obvious violation of the first rule of living in Belize: Keep it simple!

Geez db, It never crossed my mind that people would think I was SO STUPID that i would just want to lug around 40lbs of dog food for no good reason?? I guess that's a lesson learned in ASSUMING people would know I had a reason???A good one. Hope it made a few of you laugh!! And come on Bill...nothing about our "venture" to BZ has been "simple"....maybe it will all simmer down?? You all have a great weekend!!! Miss A,a wink to you-you GOT IT, huh??? :p

...our lab was on a prescription diet in the States as well... R/D kibble (which I believe stands for "reduced diet") 'vet said that she should lose about 10-15 of her 95 loveable lab pounds!!! Worked well (1 cup in, 1 cup out) but now she burns the calories w/ extra trip swimming out past the dock every day. Since it's not a matter of simple exercise for your pooch, I'd say again, just talk to the folks at one of the bigger markets in town when you get here... bring the bag so they can see what to order... I'm sure they can get it... buy it in bulk every couple of months and store it.
