well, 3 beans in Sambuca goes back to the early days of the Mafia in Sicily. If members of the Mafia were in a restaurant and they ordered Sambuca, they knew it was safe to talk because the owner would bring them Sambuca with 3 coffee beans... if the Sambuca came with no coffee beans then they knew there was someone in the restaurant that could over hear them and could not be trusted. this practice came to the US when many of Sicily's mafia came to the US. Now it is more of a tradition in honest to goodness real Italian restaurants. eek

See, now: I like your story better, but either way, Its in a snifter, Con Mosca i.e. with three beans
...which can mean it's safe to chat, or...
"health wealth and happiness." Notably, all three can come from a good talk, I suppose.
Chris
Non traditional, but I'll still let you know when its safe. wink

Well, Chris, I am glad you like my story, because it is the ONLY story... trust me. the proper phrase is: Il Sambuca con tre fagioli "sambuca with 3 beans" However, if you evered ordered it that way you would probably be found in a trash bag the next morning somewhere. laugh

Never heard of it meaning health, wealth and happiness. Must be a brand new meaning.

But it is never, ever ordered "Sambuca with 3 beans". Just "Sambuca" eek It's up to the waiter/waitress or owner to be "nel sa". (in the know)

Do you swallow the beans along with the sambuca? Do you sip it or shoot it?

My gosh, it is all so complicated. I would hate to mess it up.

Perhaps I should stick to One Barrel with three kidney beans in it. laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh

laugh... normally, you just leave them in the glass. However, I know people that chew them, then swallow, etc. but mostly they are left in the glass. eek

I'm sure DS knows way more about this than I do, being my elder and all, but when we were in Italy we heard that you put three in because odd numbers are luckier than even. We also got the health, hapiness & properity version. In my book anything with coffe is worth a shot. (Pardon the pun wink )

that's "prosperity" and "coffee" - I do know how to spell, just not how to type very well!

Kind of hard to find these days but Durlys has always been good. Sip a bit of your coke and pour right in.

I read it on the internet so it must be true.
