Damn does this mean our coral cable might be affected as well?

Bank machines what a pain.

Thanks for posting this Marty as we do not usually keep cash on hand more than we need.

Please keep posted if anyone hears anything on this.

Does strike = no service? I think strike means less service. The workers cannot legally "shut down" BTL because of a labor dispute. Now if some act of sabotage were to occur, that is something different. I suppose I am looking at this a bit more optimistically.

The strike deadline has moved to 10th March, and both sides are hopeful that there will be enough time to settle things.

Knckrbkr - regardless of the finer legal points, BTL workers struck (in 2005 I think) and the whole system went down. Electronics were destroyed, and fibre-optic cables were severed repeatedly. Repairs would be made and the cables would be cut again.

No 911 / no way to call police, ambulance or fire department. Yes, people did die as a result.

Repair and replacement of the big fibre-optic cables did not come cheaply - and the customers paid for that in the end.

The credit card part was very difficult for travelers. The average local person made little or no money for more than a week - not just in the tourism sector ---- it was everybody everywhere who got hurt.

For US travelers - Homeland Security requires that a manifest of passengers is faxed to the US port of entry before a plane leaves the ground in Belize. No phone - no flights.

Yes, always travel with money - real money - wherever you go. Being one day away from broke is really bad practice even "at home".

The public was angry with the total stupidity of the acts of sabotage, but sympathetic with the reason it was happening. If my memory serves me correctly, there was a full 10-day period with no phone communication with the outside world --- it was not a good thing. Hopefully the workers who did this last time saw how much they hurt their own families and their own villages by taking this route.............. Hopefully reason will prevail this time. I think it will.

I was there for the last strike and I did not have any problems with credit cards or flights. We did pay mostly with cash but we rented a cart one day and they took credit card.

When the telecommunications system is down, vendors "can" take credit cards, but if the card is maxed out or stolen, it's impossible to tell. The CC companies will hold the vendor responsible.

I will have a Belikin -- put it on klcman's tab.
