Amanda,
There are no immediate environmental repercussions connected to guppies, as far as I know, especially not when held in small ponds or even a bucket in a corner of your property.

Maybe you don't know guppies. They are small fresh water fish (cannot survive in salt or brakish water) and also live happily in gutters in i.e. Kenya, Tanzania, Brazil, Chile and even the mosquito plagued forests in Scandinavia where they have worked wonders - and that is a fact.

I have had hundreds, if not thousands of them in my time. These are not like the Talapia and other man-made "wonders".
They don't kill anything but mosquitos. They are actually being eaten by bigger things all the time.

Not a solution to all mosquito problems, of course; but just a suggestion and not a bad thing to have in a 5 gallon bucket underneath your house.

I used to have guppies in a tank.

I mistakenly thought you were talking about mosquito fish.

I have gold fish and koi - they love the mosquito larvae.

Yes, we just stayed at a hotel in Merida. They had small basins with guppies in them, placed in the reception area and around the rooms. They told me that they had not had a mosquito problem since they put those little fish there.

I will try to do the same thing here at our place, if I can find the guppies in Belize - or be allowed to import them without the ususal 300% duty.

Actually also quite pretty little fish too...

That is a great idea. I think I would like to try that as well. Please let me know when you find a place to get them.

Belize City has guppies in their gutters and ditches.
I don't know if its planned or intentional. I noticed them an thought how unusual.
Guppies reproduce faster than rabbits.

..we were running errands in BZE City yesterday... noticed literally hundreds of guppies (or guppy like fish) in the gutter in front of the police station. Run across the street to Simon Quan's, buy a little net in their "garden" section, then run back across the street and scoop 'em up... there you go, you're all set!!!

Not sure I understand the logic in introducing standing water vessels for Guppies, rather than ensuring you don't have any standing water around your property. No standing water no Mosquitos.

Unless of course Guppies are those fish I read about recently that can survive out of water and they then run around hunting down mosquitos like Geckos. Then I'd want to see some.

Well. Now we are back to standing water. After the rain of the last couple of days, the water table again has risen above septic at above school. Again it is a health hazard. Sorry to be a bummer but I go by it every day .

They'll be purchasing more fill to help solve the problem now that the PM has given them $2,000 during his recent visit. Good to see progress!
