In the immortal words of the late great Andy Palacio....

Not for Sale

By Andy Palacio (1996) on Til da Mawning

Eena dis ya life! Eena dis ya life!
Some things you just can't buy
Some thing you just can't sell
Talk about dignity, that is not for sale!
Your integrity, that is not for sale!
Your buccaneer mentality causing this calamity
Look what you done to the Maya Land
National sovereignty, that is not for sale!
The people's property, that is not for sale!
From the 17th century back to haunt society
Look like yu jus neva understand
You neva own none a dis land
Wi national heritage, that is not for sale!
And fi we patronage, that is not for sale!
Yu tun politician and get a good position
Now yu nuh look pon people dem
No! You nuh look pon people dem
Oh di almighty dollar!

(maybe Marty or some computer literate person could post the link so you can hear the song. It's great!)

How often do you presently go clear south to the South Beach site? Why? There isn't much there to see. So how would this development affect you if it gets built? If you don't go there you won't even have any awareness of it.
I'm not advocating this project, merely pointing out that many of you are over-reacting to it.

it's not just about SouthBeach. It's about the chopping, dredging & selling of the natural resources for a quick buck

thank you barb, both for your above answer and posting that song. you and i talked of this a while ago, and i know we are on the same page. jesse, i see your point too, but both snowball and ripple effect will ensue. i can't imagine anyone wont be able to see the neon and light pollution at night, or the "new skyline" of AC. plus, what about the pelican cayes?

i saw this (posted by barnacle) a few months back. it affected me. i am re-posting it, to bring awareness. please take the time to check it out.

A huge development will greatly effect the entire area. In the short term, large scale hotels will take away business from smaller places in the same way that Home Depot takes business away from the local hardware stores. Same goes with restaurants, casinos, etc...

If it were to be built there would only be two long-term possibilites for the rest of the island. Either San Pedro would fall into ruin as all of the money would be moved south or San Pedro would eventually be swallowed up by development. There are good points and bad points to either scenerio but both will totally change Ambergris Caye forever. Any land/business owner should be very aware of what's going on!

Thats not the experience of my hometown, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. The larger developments brought badly needed jobs and more business to the restaurants, activity centers, etc....a plus for the community.

I got drunk at one of those resorts back in the day.

then why not go ahead and dredge that cruise ship dock on AC while they're at it. it "will bring badly needed jobs and more business to the restaurants and activity centers, etc"...same frickin' difference to me.

all the huge developments did to my area was increase traffic to the point where it takes 20 minutes to go 5 miles, double home prices, and my taxes go up exponentially every year. i can no longer get a table at my fave eateries and the woods are all but gone.

i'm sure someone else is seeing the $$, but sure as hell not me.

That was scenerio 2. The development could spread all the way up north bringing tons of money to the area! Like I said, there are good and bad points...everyone living there could make some nice cash but the peacefulness of the island will be lost.
