No disaster here - the first named storm of the season was tropical and we are used to tropical storms. The boat losses were due to rookies, overconfidence or laziness. There was no damage to any major Hotel, Restaurant or Resort at all!

we also drove it last month, but before the rain. it was indeed passable, but it is a long, hot and extremely bumpy trip. this is not a "road" as you think of a road. but that's part of the adventure. smile

From my understanding the reason so many boats sank is that there was no forecast for the amount of rain that fell - during the night. I know some very seasoned and smart boat owners who had theirs go down.

Grand Caribe has graded the road from just north of Sweet Basils up past Nurse Natalie's place. This was a great improvement to most of it but caused some problems in others. A golf cart ride north is like playing roulette.

I guess the "seasoned, smart boat owners" were just lazy. I know my guide was up in the middle of the night making sure his bilge pump was keeping up with the water.
Glad he doesn't rely on the weather man for his destiny. laugh

BDB - Portofino (never eaten there but I hear it is VERY good), others on the list that you should try are; Beachin Kitchen for brunch, Palapa Bar, Sweet Basil's and have Marlon make you one of his famous cocktails at Coco Loco. My advice is to try as many as you can!
As far as the golf cart ride up north, you have to experience it once in your lifetime but if the roads are bad then treat it like the disclaimer at Disneyworld that you can not be pregnant, have back problems or in poor health to ride this ride!

I believe they were asking about restaurants accessed with their cart. Portofino is at least 7 miles north and not golf cart accessible

still doesn't answer the question. If they are already staying up north and want to cart close to where they are staying going into town does not help.

Portofino is only 3 miles north of Capt. Morgans. But I would never recommend good or bad driving at night on road north of Journeys End as there are few lights and you will miss some of the pot holes.
Again close to Captain Morgans~ Luna, Capricorn, Rendezvous,
About 2 miles south Beachn kitchen, Pinki Knox, Sweet Basils and Bean
Take the Ferry to Rojo Lounge or Mambo
Ferry or complimentary ride from Portofino
If you are in town well plenty of posts on great places to eat. Also South of town has some great food...Hidden Treasures, El Divino and Victoria house.
Hope this helps
