Big Frank-
I read your random thoughts and thank you for all of them. We have about 10 hours to do something in Belize City after we get off the Nekton. What would you do and where would you eat dinner? Thanks to all for the help making this trip memorable for our group.

Second- hand info, as I haven't done it is...
Even though many people of our ilk[what is your ilk?] don't like zoos, I hear the Bze zoo is a great grassroots experience and is about 1 hour from the city.
Recommended restaurants are Smoky Mermaid in the Great House which is walking distance to water taxi, or Mangos.
Then check the quality of the local Belikins!

Thanks for the reply. Our group really doesn't like zoos but wouldn't mind the baboon sanctuary. Have heard it's quite a distance from the city. Know anything about it? What are the mangroves like? Where can you take the water taxis to that wouldn't be too far away? What to see?

Corrections, Mangoes not mangroves. Is that a bar in Belize City? I have told my husband that distance is measured in terms of the local favorite beer. He loved it!

LOL--Yes, Mangoes is a restaurant[I can never spell that word] Try a more general post as my time in city is limited. Smoky Mermaid comes highly recommended. Have you checked with Lan Sluder or the guidebooks? Why 10 hours in Bze city--do you have a plane to catch back home?

God, I wish I was going with you! My wife and I just returned. and aside from now being broke, it was the best trip.

There are lots of fun things that you can do from Belize City. There is the zoo, horseriding in the jungle, river canoe trips, river cave trips, exploring Mayan ruins, Crooked Tree Bird Sanctuary and the Baboon Sanctuary. If you would like a more detailed description, travel time etc. you can email me direct at [email protected]

I honestly can't think of a thing to do recreationaly in Belize City besides watching my back. Be careful and keep your guard up. Husseling is the national past time there. Brodies Supermarket is near the docks. A good place to get almost anything you may need later. Too far to the Baboon Sancuary for your schedule in my opinion. Depends on the weather, but the roads can be dicey out that way. 10 hrs. is an odd number to kill. Too long to sit, too short to split. I assume you can't rent a car for such a short time, and taking a bus out of town is a very short turn around by Belize time. I'd probably go to the Princess and hang out there to kill time. They have movies and a casino. Beats fighting off Ganjah dealers.

You need to go back to Dallas, Dave, and stay there. You are full of venom and no good advice. Belize City is 99% nice friendly people and 1% jerks. Apparently you only attract the jerks. Wonder why?

Hey, guys I didn't mean to start a fight. 10 hours IS a weird amount of time to spend, but we arrive in the city from the Nekton at 8 am and will check into our hotel. We plan to eat dinner that evening, probably at the Smokey Mermaid around 6 or 7 so we need suggestions of interesting things to do between times. The reason we are staying the extra day is we were going cave tubing, but much later realized it's an all day deal.
