I know nothing for certain, but the way it was explained to me is that it is private land with essentially an easement.

Maybe a topic for a new thread, but it's a related question I guess... does the Belize constitution have the concept of eminent domain?

So the correct answer may actually be... private land with undocumented easements likely to eventually become government land via eminent domain.

I didn't have a clue what "eminent domain" was, but I see from Wikipedia that it's compulsory purchase. I imagine that to drive a new road through anywhere some degree of compulsory purchase is likely to be necessary.

So I assume that the city is trying to address this before any more expansion occures. Its a must to get a handle on a road to service what some day has to happen.

GOB can acquire land for (public purposes) the purpose of declaring a road - however the government will pay for the land.

There is a legal system in place to allow the government to declare an acquisition - obviously such things can be appealed - however in the instance of the road to run from town heading north the fact of the matter is that the road is necessary and will become a reality.

When we sold land in areas where there hasn't been a designated roadway we have always warned our clients that a road will be declared at some point, therefore be prepared and plan your structures accordingly.
