Katie, they usually know now, or will decide later. So, what makes us gracious posters?
Why is that my job?
If slow season, goes slower than slow, what's open evolves. Can you even begin to get commitments out of businesses now? What I said before is pretty accurate...Blue Water Grill, and associate...and Banana Beach.
Are you oK?

If I remember correctly Caramba's usually closes in August, Celi's closes in October, and I think Elvi's closes in October also.

Hey all -

I just read a breakdown of the seasons. It said August-October was mosquito season (and right before that is the rainy season, which doesn't sound pleasant either!). I welt up pretty bad with mosquitos - how bad is it during that time? Thanks in advance smile

Mosquitos can be avoided with a combination of common sense clothing and repellant. However that is peak time for Mosquitos. The Town Core has/had a spray program that keeps them to a minimum compared to the North and South of the Caye so if this is a major concern think of this when choosing where to stay. Keep windows and doors closed at dusk or dawn and at all times open windows and doors in the lee of the breeze need screens if open.

All or most dive shops are open in Sept. Only businesses that close now it seems are the ones that are owned by Expats that go away for the slow months, I find.

If you get dive certification here, Sept is ideal IMO. It's generally slow and you may find the best instructors very available. If you are certified before you come, dives in Sept. may be less frequent to some areas and all shops need a minimum of bookings before doing the big trips (eg Blue Hole) so call around and put your names in early so they can start putting a trip together. The local dive sites near the island, you can do with only 2 people almost anytime and again, you'll get the very best of the guides in that slow time. Another thing to consider is the possibility of a postponed trip due to weather conditions but you'll be able to go even later that day or the next.

Mosquitoes even in dry season seem to bite tourists when locals and people living here aren't being bothered by them. Just make sure you are stocked up with good repellent and you should be fine. Maybe bring some with you 'cause it's very expensive here.

2 great things that work for sand fleas and mosquitos along with repellant are baby oil and Avon Skin So Soft body oil. The fleas slide right off and can't penetrate the skin.
