OK, come on guys!!! Had the bone never been found, how would you rate the TASTE of the tacos???? I remember years ago when a rumor started (in the news) here, that a "certain chain" of fast food establishments were accussed of using kangaroo and "other" types of animals in their food. You think that only goes on there? You ever work for any fast food establishments?? If OUR health dept. only knew the things that go on "behind the scenes" on a daily basis...and ya'll surely wouldn't eat there if you knew!!!

Thanks for bothering to research this and share the information! I don't eat meat anyway but I'll definitely make sure my husband sticks to the fish & veggies while we're there... as the "parents" of two cats and a dog we wouldn't want to contribute to any cat being treated that way! Thanks!

New article today:
http://www.channel5belize.com/news/welcome.shtml#5

From the sound of it, Belize citizens are just as disgusted at the thought of eating cat as the average American or Canadian. This is good news as I think that it confirms that this practice is not wide spread. There have been plenty of stories (although unverified) here in the Midwest about this sort of thing and I imagine in happens to one degree or another everywhere.

However, Belize probably does have mystery meat show-up more often just because of the poverty. This does not mean cat or dog necessarily but any animal (including cows, chickens, etc..) that can be hunted or raised cheapily with out proper care or inspections.

I would like to hear how the average Belize citizen feels about the subject. Any takers?

Text from article:

Restaurant owner faces charges in cat case
Reaction to the startling story of a Cayo Chinese restaurant found to have freshly skinned cat in the kitchen has been fast and furious. Anecdotal reports from around Belize City indicate that last night business dropped off sharply at Chinese food emporiums as local consumers abandoned chowmein and fried rice for more readily identifiable fare. Owners of Chinese restaurants contacted by News 5 have all condemned the serving of cat and say that they have no knowledge of any similar incidents. Meanwhile, Lee Restaurant in San Ignacio remains shut down by health authorities. Proprietor Lee Chun Hua is expected to appear in Magistrate's Court on Friday to face charges of preparing a cat carcass for sale.

Some years back, the Chinese Restaurant across from where I work was cited by the health department for having cat in their freezer. The owners comment was that the cat meat was for personal consumption and was not served to the public. I don't think I've eaten there since!

I will be making my 3rd trip to Belize in about 2 weeks. The first time I went was in '96. I spent 3 months in the jungle of southern Belize and got a bunch of shots: hepatitus A, Gamma Globulin, etc., plus malaria pils. In '98 I went to Placencia for 10 days and didn't get any shots - nor malaria pills! (dumb). For my trip in a couple weeks (4 days on Amb. Caye and 3 days in the jungle) I got Hep. A and 6 malaria pills. The best thing to do is go to the CDC web site, read about Belize and listen to what your travel physician tells you. A day or two of discomfort from a shot is certianly better than hepatitus, malaria, etc!!!

Have Fun!!!

When we were in one of the local AC restaurants last week one of the locals said they also eat pig tails. We didn't see any being served anywhere but apparently it is considered a delicacy. You know some of us in Texas eat Rattlesnake, of course while wearing a cowboy hat, riding a bull and listening to a little JJW or Willie Nelson! Not me !!Well maybe the music part.

I am hoping that last post was a joke:p That is definately one part of ANY animal I would NOT eat...lol. I wonder who named them that. Do they really taste like oysters, or do you just have to eat them like oysters to keep from spitting them out in disgust...lol?
