There is some fantastic property on Ambergris Caye's West coast,Its all been made a tiny bit more accessible by the East/West Road, the problem being once your on the East side via the EW road going North or South is a bit difficult.
Going by boat isn't bad but you have to go through the river in San Pedro and around the point of the island by Cayo Espanto, at that point your about as South on the Island as you can get and the trip to properties on the North West side is a long trip in shallow rocky water.
Please don't confuse my disdain for the GBE as negative for the whole West coast. The west coast is definitely different in that its Bay Side but Bay Sides can have their pluses. The East Side (reef side) populated first probably because its breezier, less bugs and easy access to the reef, but as we know its also about $2,000us a foot more expensive.

Are you guys talking about pica pica when you refer to the "sea lice" out on the East side? I thought that was a seasonal thing, and happens in the spring?

TIA

No the sea lice are little biting creatures that live in the silt and mud of the bay and lagoons.

Think Elbert means "West Coast" above....

Trip by boat around back by Cayo Espanto is not bad at all, just be wary of your draft and the tide. You need to know how to navigate around Cayo Esapnto (if in doubt, use the barge channel and go the long way.) Once you're past Cayo Espanto, the main thing to watch out for are fish traps! That and be careful where you come off plane, as you might not get back up ON plane and you'll end up poling for a good while.

RE: road, no appreciable way to go either north nor south once you take the East-West road to GBE. Even if you were to drive the shoreline, you would not make it far before you got a flat (or 2 or 3 or 4) given the rockiness there.

Go by boat...

here is why I love it back there:

Sea lice look like tiny white roaches. I don't think they live in the silt. Both times I've been bitten by them on the west coast was on hard sand bottom in very shallow water (shin deep). It feels like getting stabbed with a syringe, imo. Not Nice!
And to be fair, I was also bitten once by sea lice on the reef side. But then again, I generally get attacked by all kinds of bugs more often than the average person. I'm just too sweet for my own good. wink

RE: sea lice, it's hit or miss... I've waded barefoot on the sand bars around the little islands before the Cayo Francis lagoon for hours at a time before and never been bothered... other times, they've been a nuisance. To write it off completely though is kind of like saying "I don't like going outside at the beach ever as sometimes there are sand flies."
