We had an officer transfered here last year that was unwilling to take any reports, after a short time it was found he could not read or write well enough to fill out reports. The new recruits that come here get around $20 U.S a day, and housing. The officer that was always drinking, usually at China Town and shot a dog during the day at the split with people all around was transferred as well. I said these incidents are not the majority, Never say never, then thats a world wide statment isnt it..a few bad apples.but to say it does not exist is nieve. A new officer has to live with the low wages for about 2 years, then they get a decent salery of about $8,500 a year, if they can stick with it then it can increase.

Oh sorry, i thought you were talking belize dollars. Around $40 bz plus benefits are probably realistic for a new recruit.

Details will be forthcoming as we plan a big drive to let the community know what we are doing.....the basics are that we will be conducting a roundup at least one or two nites a week.....the dogs and cats......yes cats are included....will be held at Ft. Dog and the clinic and processed. All captures will be held a minimum of 3 days to allow owners to claim them..... only after the animal is altered and vaccinated and a fee paid!! Unclaimed captures will be evaluated as to health and adoptability and may be kept longer if possible to find them a good home. All captures will be photographed and documented. Please alert everyone you can to keep their animals at home and off the streets.....this will begin shortly after months end.

Good plan. Glad to hear it. I find the poisoning truly horrible and commend the individuals who are finding and implementing the solution.

And for those who say they would not live here due to the method of eradication - you'd probably also have not moved here 15 years ago due to the roaming packs of strays, most of whom were slowly dying an excruciating death from heartworm. The suffering of those animals was heartrending.

Sadly, the lack of awareness about birth-control and nurture-care is not limited to animal-keeping ------

Bill, the roundup plan sounds like a very good one! I sent a donation yesterday through Paypal on Saga's page and urge everyone to do the same. It's not enough to write and to put time and comments on a message board, people need to contribute where they can. We try to be active in Saga throughout the year with silent auctions, donations etc. Not just when we are on the island.

Once again, this seems like a very very good solution and I look forward to hearing the outcome.

Awesome plan! I have made a donation and I'm in the process of soliciting donations from US Animal Control Officers that sympathize with San Pedro's problem. I am glad that progress is being made in this matter. I am still concerned about the sheer numbers. If 10 dogs a week come off the street we have done nothing. I think it would be good to weekly post the results. This sounds very similar to the last plan and the results should be carefully monitored to see if it is being effective in combating the health and safety concerns. Just around my house you would catch 20-30-dogs easily. Residents in other areas are also crying out to do something about the problem. I would think to be an effective program it will need to remove 50-100 dogs weekly for a while. That is an aggressive plan that will work 10 dogs a week will not work considering the current population of dogs. The 32 dogs that were killed have made no effect on the number of strays you see. Citizens from all parts of town are asking for help and that will be hard to do picking up only 1-2 days a week..
Very important for the community that this be successful and numerical goals must be established and maintained as in any project. Weekly reports should be published. Everywhere I walk I see piles.

Mike......we will be giving numbers to the mayor every week and I will be glad to keep this forum posted. A significant part of this program will consist of OWNED ROAMING DOGS being confined....I believe this is a major element of the problem. Our goal....and it is a realistic one....is 20 removals a week. This is in addition to the normal intake that SAGA has. Mayor Danny is providing two town workers and a truck on roundup nights....in addition....the town workers will be assisting in carcass removal. This number should be within the resources we have. All captures will be held a minimum of 3 days. Also....soon we will be starting an aggressive campaign of low cost spay/neuter to control the future generations.....and I do mean aggressive. That is the only answer to bringing this situation under control long term.
