FISHING REPORT

May 19, 2013 - May 26, 2013

Weather Conditions: Sunny with cloudy spells and the occasional thunder shower. This week we had a lot of big wind which made for challenging conditions. Strong east winds 15 - 25 mph, softening by the end of the week.

Air Temperature: Heat index of 95F. High 90F Low 75F. Winds: Our prevailing wind is from the east. We had very strong E, ESE wind 10 - 25 mph most of the week. Now that the system down below us is moving, the wind is winding down to a manageable 5 - 15, East wind.

Water Temperature: Temps in the 80s

Moonphase: Full Moon May 25th

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH: Bonefishing was challenging this week! We had mudding fish that were also picky! Anglers worked hard for their bones with their guides - looked for sighted fish when the sun was out. Choppy seas had fish moving around and skiddish. Congratulations to Louis - who was able to land bonefish with his guide Captain Gilberto. Gilberto speaks English and Spanish, but not French, so they worked together to make it happen! Tommy was able to return to the flats for a fun day with Captain Alex. Bill, Judy, Roger, David, Sandy, Scott and group leader Brian all had bonefish on fly this week. And they worked for them! A few people ventured out in the lagoon and found a few bones as well.x It is easy to "fly" out there with the east wind, but coming back to the lodge can be tough when the wind was as strong as it was this week. Nice adventuring!

PERMIT: In spite of challenging conditions, Scott was able to land three permit on fly this week with Captain Emir! The first permit was - first day, first cast! Mike landed a nice permit on spin with Captain Jr. All fish released and sent back to the sea with racing heart beats left behind. We had several permit do what permit do - follow, chase..not commit!

TARPON: Did we say it is tarpon season? Guides are reporting fish down by Long and Hicks Caye as well as seeing migratory tarpon mixed in with our resident tarpon over on Savannah Flats and Mosquito Caye. Brian was able to jump and play for 20 minutes an eighty pound tarpon his last day out fishing with Captain Kechu. David was his boat mate that day and said he learned a ton from the experience. I hope when Mad River Outfitters returns in August your arms fall off from landing so many poons! You deserve it.

FLIES THAT WORKED

The Avalon fly for bones and permit! Size 4. Chrsitmas Island Special is size 8,6 and 4 are our "rice and beans" for bonefish and permit here on Ambergris Caye. Orange, pink, pearl, yellow - they all work. We also like Gotchas is the same sizes for bones and permit. We do use floating crabs, and small tan crabs for tailing permit with both bead chain and lead eyes. Most of our permit are caught on shrimp patterns. Savannah Flats/Mosquito Flats - 3/0 chartreuse toads, bunnies, tan and white working as well. We have a new olive toad that has been very successful. Long Caye - black death 5/0, Olive toads 5/0, Chartreuse bunnies 5/0.

Guide of the week: Captain Emir for getting Scott into three permit on fly this week!

This Week's Summary:

It was wonderful to see our return guests this week. Thank you Brian and Chris for hosting your Mad River Outfitter group here. Seeing Bill and Judy and being able to celebrate their anniversary was a bonus! Also great to see our friends Liz and Tommy back here at EP. We love it when our friends return and make themselves at home. We had tough fishing this week and everyone was a great sport. Guides and anglers set out each day working together to make dreams come true. We practiced our casting into the wind and we witnessed double hauls relax and leaders turn over. Cheers to a fun week and reaching beyond our horizons to keep leaning.

FISHING REPORT

May 26, 2013 - June 1, 2013

Weather Conditions: Big wind brought some unstable weather. Mostly sunny skies, clouding up later in the weeks with a few thunder showers thrown in! The breeze kept things nice on land but a little tougher for those out fishing.

Moonphase: Last Quarter Moon May 31st

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH: We are seeing some big schools of mudding fish which has been great for the anglers wanting "action" - especially when it was tough to hunt them without the sun. For the anglers wanting to hunt - we were looking for tailing fish as well as waking fish. Remember - when you see waking fish, you cast ahead of them.the wake is caused by their dorsal fins and tails, so the fly has to get ahead of them so they see it! The Cammer Family was here for their second trip and this time Nick was awarded a bonefish pin - his first bonefish on fly. His brother Sam got that dialed in last yearhis mother was hoping for a tarpon, but the bonefish kept her casting and double hauling.

PERMIT: The fish are here, but it isn't a "gimmie." Big wind kept anglers on their game casting to large schools of permit 5 to 20 lbs. We are happy to announce that Jim B. - owner of Cutthroat Anglers in Colorado - was able to land a permit with Captain Kechu. Of course, the fish ate a Christmas Island Special size 4 - our "rice and beans" for permit around here. Congratulations to Jim!

TARPON: It's tarpon fever around here! Yes, our migratory tarpon have moved in to the Long Caye area and the guides are saying they are seeing big fish mixed in with our resident tarpon over around Savannah Flats. Jim and Captain Kechu decided to go for the slam..Jim hooked a really nice tarpon right by the boat.Kechu went to leader the fish, the fish shook, and that was that. So close! Ellen asked Captain Tomas at the beginning of the day if they could go for tarpon. She had been catching bonefish and wanted a chance to "chase silver." They were in fish most of the day over on Savannah, and she was happy with her experience even thought she didn't get hooked up. Just seeing and casting to these fish is a big part of the experience. And yes, when you get that great big hand shake from Mr. Tarpon - it's something you will never forget.

Guide of the week: Captain Kechu for guiding Jim and Dee into some nice permit water - and getting one to the boat!

This Week's Summary:

It's great to welcome back Nick from Australia! He and Captain Tomas have a plan to do some damage with an arsenal of fly rods and fly boxes that are exploding with flies. The Cammer Family came back and this is a family that fishes together! Jim and Dee brought their group from Cutthroat Anglers - and the whole group has been a delight. We have been double hauling into the wind during casting clinics in the afternoon, and believe me, these anglers are leaving here with fishing memories and a double haul that will be the envy of all their angling friends back home. Mark brought out the vice and started tying up some beauty's for bones - his spontaneity had other anglers joining him around the vice for some creative patterns and new tricks. Ken and Megan ripped it up with Captain Jr. on spin and they are already looking forward to returning next year. A couple of highlights for me - Matt, age 8, figured out right away he needed to catch a bonefish so he could receive a bonefish pin before they go back home. He showed up an hour after arriving with his spin rod in hand - grabbed some shrimp from me and made it happen. I have no idea how many species he has landed this trip. My dear friends, Janet and Don were here and they learned how to fly fish! They love to fish, so this is a whole new chapter for them. It was their first international trip and they had a blast. Thank you to our El Pescador Family for a great week and helping our anglers meet their dreams.

FISHING REPORT

June 2, 2013 - June 8, 2013

Weather Conditions: It's hot! Unstable weather beyond our reef pulled our wind away and on some days it was flat calm! Partly cloudy skies, some sun, a little rain, which we need more of

Air Temperature: High 95F - low - low 80F, but felt hotter due to lack of our normal breeze. Winds: ESE, NW, W, ENE landing at the end of the week with ESE 10 - 15 mph.

Water Temperature: Temps in the 80s

Moonphase: New Moon on June 8th

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH: The bonefish is our hero. Thank you bonefish for introducing yourself to Niki, Tom and Hamilton, Zandy and Alex, Bill and Martha, The Cox Family - Scott,Karen,Elijah,Hannah and Eric, Kim, Mark and Sadao. Mike and Jeanna. Our experienced anglers were thrilled as well. Keep those reels singing! Terminology: Bonefish "honey holes -" where hundreds of bonefish travel and eat together. The angler sees a mass of fish - cast, retrieve and you're in the game. Up the game by finding tailing fish in skinny water - that will test anyone's skill. Fly or spin, skinny water is about presentation. Remember, sound travels.so wade lightly and keep boat noise down when on the prowl.

PERMIT: Permit fever continues. Mark landed a ten pound permit with Captain Emir, and Bill had one on that day as well. Deb landed her beauty on spin. Captain Duber had one on yesterday, Elijah landed a beauty, about 20 pounds with Captain Jr on spin. The grand prize went to Matt and Captain Sinoe for landing a nice 16lb permit at the end of the day to make it SLAM! Or, as my text from Sinoe said, "Slam baby!" Matt's grand slam acceptance speech was all about Sinoe aka Cinoe; "he poled and poled for those permit and would not give up!"

TARPON: The big girls are in! Captain Vince reported landing a 6ft 6 inch tarpon on live bait with Dick. That is huge! His family reports he has this kind of luck. First time tarpon fishing, Dick lands a 150 lb fish! Captain Gilberto reported landing a 90 lb tarpon on fly with Gary - way to go! Steve landed a tarpon on fly, and Mark landed a nice one wading! Nick had a few bites and runs with Captain Tomas. They spent ten days just on tarpon, and they saw some amazing stuff! Nick said Long Caye mornings were on fire. Matt knows. He landed an 80 pounder in the morning with Captain Sinoe. They picked up a bonefish and permit on the way home for the SLAM! It's a morning thing. 4 am boats went out today to capture the fish when they are feeding and rolling. This week, it was over by about 11 am. Fish are in! Both resident and migratory fish are around. The wind kept them off the flats some days, but when they were there, it was fish on!

FLIES THAT WORKED

Our "Rice and Beans," here on Ambergris Caye is the Christmas Island Special. We and the fish love them in size 8, 6 and 4. We use 6's and 4's for permit. It is our "go to" fly in orange, pink and pearl. The Avalon fly for permit size 4.

Guide of the week: Captain Sinoe for poling Matt into his permit that made his slam and birthday present!

This Week's Summary:

Welcome back to our fishing family that continues to grace us with your return here to El Pescador. It really means a lot to all of us. As you know, there are 45 of us that live and work here. When you come back, it makes us all feel good, it's that simple. Our relationships grow, and the guides and staff learn more about you. Thank you. We've been running 10 to 12 boats a day and at the end of the day I watch as our guests settle in and swap stories. Sometimes it is motivation to get out on the casting platform and practice! We cast and tied, and we came home with stories and lies! But big smiles prevailed. From the newbie landing his or her first bonefish, to those extended casts that filled dreams - we shared some cool stuff this week! Fish On!

FISHING REPORT

June 9, 2013 - June 15, 2013

Weather Conditions: So far, it's "rainy season," without the rain! We have had a few showers, that's it. We do need rain. In the meantime, the wind kept the skies sunny and clear.

Air Temperature: Heat Index of 104F - high 95F - low 80F Winds: Primarily E all week, 5 - 15 mph.

Water Temperature: Temps in the 80s

Moonphase: First Quarter Moon on June 16th

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH: Ed and I tell people when you come here to El Pescador: "We have tagged close to 1000 bonefish." I asked Dr. Aaron Adams, Executive Director for Bonefish Tarpon Trust: "How come we haven't seen any return on our tagged fish?". He said, " Tag 2000, and talk to me. " This area - where the Barrier Reef meets our island, Ambergris Caye , is a very special part of Belize. We have a ton of bonefish. And I speak for our entire team, - we love seeing anglers get into bonefish. You are in the game! Think about itI have a little fly tied onto some mono, and a fish that lives on shrimp and crabs is fooled. OK, big deal. Well, it becomes a very big deal. You have just cast a plastic line with a hand tied fly (somewhere?) to a wild fish - and connected. I'm always very proud to honor our guests with bonefish pins! Congrats to Sara from Orvis and all of you! Keep casting to your dreams.

PERMIT: Silly, really. Captain Sinoe..we're just trying to keep his head from swelling to the size of a Mayan Temple. So far, Justin has landed two permit in one day, and another the next.there has been a lot going on in the permit world around here. Recently the permit are hanging out with the tarpon, resulting in a ridiculous number of SLAMS lately, and we are thinking this is the reason. Long Caye, when it's good, is good. Congratulations to Jeff and Bruning! Anglers had several chances.but as we say, "When it's yours, it's yours." Permit addiction, scary. Bruning and Jeff way to go.

TARPON: It's .Bruning's tarpon over by Mosquito Caye with Captain Emir is . very well documented by Dan DaVala. Here is Bruning kissing his tarpon. He kissed his permit and bonefish also for a week's slam! Tarpon are around. It's an early morning game right now. Damn... But it's true. Down by Long Caye, it's over by 11 am.

Guide of the week: Captain Emir for getting our very special friend Bruning into his week's slam. As all of us can see from Bruning's ridiculous smile ~ he's enjoying some crazy times fishing!. Talent met talent when Bruning and Captain Emir joined forces.

This Week's Summary:

What a fun week. Thanks everyone for expressing your fishing passion and fun with us here at El Pescador. It's always heart felt to see our returning guests, thank you. What can we say? We have been "sold out," for weeks! All of our guides are working full time and they keep exploring. We are so proud of our guide team: Without you, new angers would never know how it feels to land a bonefish on fly. Without you, our "Grand Slam" plaque is now filled, and now we need to have the guys make a new frame. Wow. YOU GUYS ROCK!

FISHING REPORT

June 30, 2013 - July 6, 2013

Weather Conditions: Cloudy with some thunderstorms the beginning of the week. We had some big rain - about two days - where the streets of San Pedro were flooded, and our pools were overflowing. The mosquitoes have now cleared with a big E wind and clear skies.

Air Temperature: High 92F, Low 83F Winds: East 5-15 ESE 10-20

Water Temperature: Temps in the 80s

Moonphase: First Quarter June 30th

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH: Jon and his fished crazed son, Nemo, caught some really nice bonefish tailing in the lee. Part of this week was really tough - we had rain and lightening. The later really put a dent in casting time. No one really wanted to wave a graphite rod under sheets of a bolting sky. Good thinking! But between storms, we found some aggressive bonefish. Tony and Wendy returned and we were thrilled when Wendy got a nice bone on spin. Tony landed a few beautiful big bonefish between hunting for permit and tarpon with his quiver of new fly rods. John had his business buddies come down and now Chris and Damon are bonefish crazed! Jeff and Cooper went nuts with Captain Sinoe and landed a ton of bonefish before Cooper landed his tarpon! Mark was game for whatever Captain Alex had on the menu. They chased everything and ended up landing some nice bonefish on fly.

PERMIT: Jeff returned to EP in hopes of a slam. Hopefully today! He headed out early mornings this week with Captain Kechu hunting permit. They had some great shots, follows and left with hopes for next time. Permit were seen up north and Nick and Kami had shots for over two hours with Captain Jr. - Kami had one eat, but lost it. Captain Luis told me Reeves had his cast into permit for almost three hours on Saturday - they tried several different shrimp and crab patterns. They had follows, some long looks, and then rejection. They are not giving up. Luis said Reeves' casts were dead on. Rick landed two permit on live crabs with Captain Kechu. They had a half a crab left, Rick threw it on a hook and tossed it. It was inhaled, and that made two permit for Rick!

TARPON: This is really fun. We have had some great tarpon stories this week. It was special in that anglers were faced with some down right nasty conditions and still came in with tarpon tales. Jeff and his son, Cooper, were here in hopes of tarpon on fly. They were out on the casting platform after each days' fishing, practicing their new learned double hauls. Cooper was rewarded when Captain Sinoe put him on a beauty! We all witnessed Cooper floating.his smile never left, and now, God help him, he is possessed with tarpon dreams for life. And then bring in the Aki and Mak team with Captain Cesar. Mak is ten and has the great fortune of being able to get pulled out of school because his mother and father believe in his fishing education! Mak weights sixty five pounds soaking wet. He hooked into a 130 lb tarpon on live bait. He almost went flying out of the boat when Aki was able to grab his son and the rod. They landed the fish - and the picture shows it all. Aki then went on to land two tarpon on fly, the largest was 60 lbs! Andrew had three eats over by Mosquito with Captain Tomas, they just didn't stick. In tarpon fishing, it all counts! And our dear buddies, Steve and Ed were here with Captain Emir. This was their sixth time here at EP! These guys always show up to play, and they were rewarded. Sure, Ed wanted a double slam, but they both ended up landing two tarpon on flyEd made it happen on the last day, and Captain Emir was popping out of his skin with happiness. Imagine that.

FLIES THAT WORKED

Our "Rice and Beans," here on Ambergris Caye is the Christmas Island Special. We and the fish love them in size 8, 6 and 4. We use 6's and 4's for permit. It is our "go to" fly in orange, pink and pearl. The Avalon fly for permit size 2.

Guide of the week: Captain Sinoe for working with Cooper who is now a changed human from landing his first tarpon on fly. And thanks to all the guides this week for putting out your best even in the tough conditions.

This Week's Summary:

The "Good Sport Award," goes out to all of our anglers this week! They went out in torrential rain looking for fins and nervous water. They waited patiently watching sheets of rain cover any hope of sunny skies for three days. In all of this, great things happened. Joe and Charlene became engaged for starters! Joe got after the down time by passing an army of mosquitoes to get to the lagoon. He hit the beach, and between all of his hunting around, managed to propose to his lovely wife to be. Looks like he has that part of the hunting figured out! Thank you Tony and Wendy, John, Jeff, Rick, Steve and Ed and the Love family for returning to El Pescador. It makes us feel great that you come back to see us and fish your waters. Until the next time. Meanwhile, keep your cast practiced for those special moments that soon become life changing.

FISHING REPORT

July 7, 2013 - July 13, 2013

Weather Conditions: Unsettled much of the week, with a couple of good days thrown in.

Air Temperature: Mid to upper eighties, low 90's. Winds: The winds were extremely variable ranging from calm to 25 mph gusts when squalls were nearby

Water Temperature: Temps ranged from 76-80 F depending on recent rain and particular flats

Moonphase: New Moon July 8th

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH: Honeymooners Chelsea and Andrew were able to land a bunch of bonefish over several days of fishing with Capt. Tomas. Father and son teams Scot & Alex and Rudi & Rudi were all successful in their bonefish quests. David and Capt. Vince had lots of bonefish to the boat as did repeat guests Ned and Sean. Tracy ( a beginning fly fisher) landed one on the fly rod along side her husband Scott and their guide Capt. Raton.

PERMIT: None were landed this week as most of the boats were after tarpon.

TARPON: We have a tarpon tagging expedition at the lodge over the last half of this week and the first half of next week. We have been awarded 7 satellite tags thanks to the generosity of Bonefish Tarpon Trust and the University of Miami. These tags are to be deployed in migratory tarpon over 90 pounds so we can get an idea where our summer fish travel after they pass through Belize. With bad weather one day and good the next you would expect the results to be better on the good day - not so. On the best day, no one was able to land a fish but on the bad day Steve landed 2 on the fly rod with Capt. Tomas, Ford got one to the boat with Capt. Kechu and numerous fish were grappled with. Scott and Tracy were getting them to bite daily with Capt .Raton jumping several fish in the few days they fished. The tarpon were active at times and not eating at other times. One boat reported 20 shots without a bite while on the same day another boat had 3 shots and hooked all 3. It shows how random tarpon fishing can be.

OTHER SPECIES: Barracudas, jacks, ladyfish, and snappers, groupers, triggerfish.

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONES - Christmas Island Specials, Gotcha, Crazy Charlie, and Turneffe Crab

FOR PERMIT - Avalon, Christmas Island Special

FOR TARPON - Olive Toad, Black Death, Purple toad, Chartreuse bunny

Guide of the week: Capt. Tomas for his excellent care of honeymooners and the great tarpon guiding for Steve and Erik in the tagging expedition.

This Week's Summary:

Off and on weather throughout the week put a damper on several days this week. Bonefish were very cooperative; permit had a holiday from our anglers since the lodge was dominated by tarpon folks. The tagging expedition has included seminars about tarpon like leader design, fighting techniques and included some fascinating tagging results from Florida presented by Bruce Unger of the University of Miami, Tarpon are amazing creatures with a secret life that we are just starting to see. FISHING REPORT

July 14, 2013 - July 20, 2013

Weather Conditions: The week started windy and rainy but cleared up nicely as the week went on.

Air Temperature: Upper 80s, low 90's. Winds: East for the most part from 5-10 some days to 10-20 other days.

Water Temperature: Temps 78-82 degrees

Moonphase: The first quarter moon was on July 15th.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH: Father and son team Tom and Tony landed a half dozen bonefish on their outing with Capt. Vince. Some day trips folks got into some big bonefish days also, Returning guests Bruce and Tonya Shaw brought their son Ben and daughter in law Rachel for the week. It was Rachel's first time with a fly rod and, despite her apprehension about learning to fly fish, she was a star student on the casting platform. The bonefish loved her, and Ben too, and they earned their bonefish pins easily with Capt. Kechu. The Barnes family has returned yet again and Robert, Jeanna, Ryan and David were guided to bonefish with Capt. Luis. Ron and Carolyn from "Hook and Hackle" got started with a good bonefish day on their first day out with Capt. Erlindo. AJ and Jenny both got bonefish on the fly rod their first day out. First time bonefisher John teamed up with Capt. Cesar for a nice bonefish day as well. Bonefishing was pretty steady even on the cloudy days.

PERMIT: Lots of close calls - Tom narrowly missed his permit and doesn't want to talk about it!, Steve missed a few, then finally the brother team of Carson & Christian broke the slump with a nice pair of permit (one each) on their first day out with Capt. Emir.

TARPON: Sean had a stellar week! He jumped 7 and landed 3 on his best day with Capt. Cesar followed by jumping 2 nice poons the next day. And it doesn't stop there! The day after that another 9 tarpon were in the air and another 3 to the boat. For the week they jumped 18 and landed 7,,, Holy Cow! Lots of hookups with the tarpon taggers that left midweek but none were big enough to tag. They need 90 pounds or better to qualify for the satellite tag and the best was 68 pounds. They had a lot of bigger fish on but couldn't get them to the boat. Walker landed a nice 30-pound fish and lost another a bit bigger with Capt. Tomas late in the week.

OTHER SPECIES: Barracudas, jacks, ladyfish, and snappers.

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONES - Christmas Island Specials, Gotcha, Crazy Charlie

FOR PERMIT - Gummy Minnow, Christmas Island Special - pink size 4

FOR TARPON - Chartreuse bunny, deceiver ( white and olive), tan toad, white cockroach.

Guide of the week: Captain Cesar for the huge tarpon days with Sean (jumped 18 and landed 7)

This Week's Summary:

The tagging expedition finished its work here at El Pescador, which was named an official research center this week! Please join Bonefish tarpon Trust to keep this research going! http://www.bonefishtarpontrust.org/

FISHING REPORT

July 21, 2013 - July 27, 2013

Weather Conditions: Mostly sunny all week

Air Temperature: Upper 80s, low 90's. Winds: East 8-15 mph

Water Temperature: Temps ranged from 78-82 F

Moonphase: Full Moon July 22nd

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH: Carolyn and Ron had their best bonefishing ever with over 20 each - Carolyn's best was 5 pounds and Ron's was 4.5 pounds - Capt. Erlindo does it again! Young Christopher and Capt. Kechu did some wading for some bigger bonefish since it was a little too windy for the tarpon flats. John finished up his quick trip with some bonefish on his last day on Sunday with Capt. Cesar. AJ and his bride Jennie did well but it looks like AJ is now addicted to salt water, and they will return! Buck and Jake tore up the bone fish stopping at 35 for the day but then added another dozen fish of different species. Capt. Erlindo said they wanted to come back early cause they caught so many fish!. Returning guest Wade, his brother Lawrence and his Dad Roy got into many bonefish their first day on Saturday, a couple big one at 5 pounds!

PERMIT: There were only a few anglers at the lodge this week and no one pursued permit wholeheartedly with the exception of 14 year old Christopher. Capt. Kechu and Christopher had a few nice shots but no permit were hooked, a couple hit the fly but didn't stick! Christopher is planning a tour of the US in which he hopes to land a fish in every state in the US over the next few years and blog about the experience.

TARPON: Only a couple days were spent looking for tarpon with a boat going out on Thursday when the winds were lighter. Capt. CInoeh landed one and jumped three on his boat. Returning guest Dave jumped 2 on Friday on Savannah flats with Capt. CInoeh and got a coupe to bite the next day. He will be here into next week so we will see if Dave can come through!

OTHER SPECIES: Jacks, ladyfish, barracudas, snapper, pufferfish, triggerfish.

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONES - Ron's UV shrimp (you'll have to ask Ron at Hook and Hackle!), Crazy Charlie, CI Specials

FOR PERMIT - N/A

FOR TARPON - White bunny, tan toad, chartreuse bunny

Guide of the week: Captain Cinoeh for his tarpon savvy!

This Week's Summary:

Pretty nice weather but not too many anglers here to enjoy it - only a few boats going out most days. Everyone was able to land as many bonefish as they pleased but tarpon and permit were fairly elusive. ---Ed.

FISHING REPORT

August 4, 2013 - August 10, 2013

Weather Conditions: Mostly cloudy Sunday, partly cloudy midweek with one overcast day, clearing towards the end of the week.

Air Temperature: Upper 80s, low 90's. Winds: East 8-15 mph

Water Temperature: Temps ranged from 78-82 F

Moonphase: New moon August 6th

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

GRAND SLAMS: Yes that's plural! Congratulations to Marco who was able to land a nice tarpon a huge permit and a tiny bonefish for some reason the bonefish took 3 hours to get, they were sweating bullets as it got later. Same thing happened to our Australian friend Barney, got the tarpon and permit and spent 2 hours for the bonefish!!! I think it is the hot calm weather so the afternoon fishing has been slower! Captain Emir was the leader of both of these slams that were on a combination of light tackle and fly rod.

BONEFISH: David, Jerry, Casey, Charlie all got bonefish , Father and Son Russ and Russell beat up the bonefish again on their second day out on the water. Lisa and Patrick had a good day in the lagoon on their own finding some bigger bonefish in some very shallow water. Driscoll and Sherry qualified easily for their bonefish pin awards after chasing tarpon most of the day. Father and son Gary and Gary threw at some permit but landed some bonefish with Capt. Luis at the helm. Day Trippers Eric and Stephen did some bonefish with Capt. Raton. Camille made it out solo to the back lagoon system and was able to stalk some bones on her own. Our Australian friends Crom, Vivian, Barney and Olivia continually added bonefish as their trip progressed

PERMIT: Jerry came through and broke the permit drought! He and his guide Capt. Erlindo came through with a good permit on Sunday! Harold and Karin hooked 3 and Harold landed his, at 80 years old he is my hero! Capt Luis was on the poling platform and intercepted a school of mudding permit and the guests made the shots! Michelle hooked an nice on early in the week, Barney had one on Marco landed a beauty on his way to a grand slam with Capt. Emir.

TARPON: A 3 tarpon day from one of the 5 Australians in house this week. She was using live bait with Capt. Emir. They had several more on as well. Cale picked up the first fly caught tarpon of the week with his trusty guide Capt. Cinoeh. The following day Peter was able to land his first tarpon ever thanks in part to Capt. Vince. Driscoll and Sherry hooked 3 tarpon but none got past the first jump. Ed and Capt. Tomas went out on a busman's holiday and landed a nice 25 pounder on Thursday. A solid tarpon capped off the grand slam for Marco with Capt. Emir on the back of the boat.

FOR BONES - Crazy Charlie, Gotcha, C.Is. Special

FOR PERMIT - Turneffe crab, Avalon

FOR TARPON - Black Death, Chartreuse toad

Guide of the week: Captain Emir for the 3 tarpon day with the new tarpon queen of El Pescador - Olivia and the grand slam with Marco!!!

This Week's Summary:

FISHING REPORT

August 11, 2013 - August 17, 2013

Weather Conditions: Overcast skies with thunderstorms came in with a low pressure system that took over mid week and moved out on the 17th. We had a lot of rain, wind and lightening. Needless to say, a sunny Saturday morning was welcomed by all.

Air Temperature: Upper 80s, low 90's. Winds: ESE 10 - 25, moved NW, then NE to settle on E 10 - 20.

Water Temperature: Temps ranged from 78-82 F

Moonphase: First Quarter Moon August 14th

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH: The Mad River Outfitters group all landed bonefish on fly. Way to go Andy, Russ, Joe, Darryl, Jennifer, Caitlin, Cullen, Holden Glenn and Howie! We had some serious tarpon hunting going on, and the bonefish were welcomed to "lighten up" the day and remember the fun of fly fishing in the salt. Bonefishing with fly can be challenging, but generally speaking, hook ups on bonefish happen more readily than tarpon on fly. So we get that energetic fight from Mr. Bonefish, and we breathe again. It was fun to see the Clark family all fishing together. Beth, Joe, Kate and Joe all landed bonefish on fly. We had quite a few anglers out in the lagoon this week, all with reports of landing bonefish. This is a self-guided experience so these fish are very satisfying to the curious anglers who venture out. Dean, Kevin, Doug, Dave, Scott, and Joe get the adventure award!

PERMIT: Doug went out his first day with Captain Raton and landed an 18lb permit on fly! Father and daughter Alan and Allison both landed permit on fly with Captain Vince! Wow. Felipe is a guide in Argentina and was fishing with Captain Luis and landed a 20 lb permit on fly on the 16th. Dean landed a small - but very loved - permit on fly day two of the Tres Pescados Tournament. He is fishing with his team mate Kevin and Captain Emir. Tim landed a permit with Captain Cesar - and now we are waiting to find out who is in numero uno position!

TARPON: Tarpon fever prevailed this week. Howie's dream was to see, cast to and land a tarpon on fly. Well, he got the "big bite," a few jumps and never ending smiles. Howie is closer than he was, and was thrilled with this accomplishment. Mad River Outfitters group leader, Andy, had 4 bites one day, and he too is addicted. (Andy's first love is carp - so this could present a problem - carp might have to share). In spite of really tough weather, some tarpon were landed but not counted for the first few days of the Tres Pescados tournament. Dean had a nice one to the boat, they tagged the leader but it got away before the photo! The very same thing happened to Tim who is also fishing in the tournament with Captain Cesar. In real life, touching the leader is a landed fish. It counts. But for the tournament, they need a measured and photographed fish to score. In spite of the weather, anglers had several shots at tarpon this week!

OTHER SPECIES: Monty had several barracuda on fly - a completely under- rated fish! Big fun.

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONES - Crazy Charlie, Gotcha, CI Special

FOR PERMIT - Turneffe Crab, Avalon, Big Squimps!

FOR TARPON - Black Death, Chartreuse toad

Guide of the week: Captain Cesar for Team Pesca con Mosca! First place in Tres Pescados Tournament. They slammed and then had the most points for bonefish.

This Week's Summary:

It's great to see our return guests/family. Adam and Julie, Dave and Gayle, Scott (and now Stephanie), Dean and Tracy, Kevin, Tim, Kyle, Porter, Tripp and Tarpon Tony. We may have had a tough week with a tropical depression, but there were big hearts and fun laughter over the thunder.

TRES PESCADOS RESULTS

Congratulations to Tim and Kyle - Team Pesca con Mosca with Captain Cesar for FIRST PLACE!!

Congratulations to Dean and Kevin - Team Fin Addicts with Captain Emir for THIRD PLACE!!
