Canadians, well, I should specify my province of Alberta but suspect it is at least similar country-wide, have to be resident in the province for a minimum of 6 months (and a day)to be eligible for healthcare benefits. Should one return to the province outside of that time limit then they will have to pay for their one care, though after 3 months of continued residence back in the province will be/may be eligible for reimbursement.

I use BUPA as well, i think it's incredibly important to carry major medical insurance. Like Judyann, i also have a USA exclusion, but i dont want my father to have to sell his house if i'm stricken with some very expensive disease... People that love you will do what they have to to keep you alive, even if you dont want them to...and i dont want that burden/guilt/responsibility. I pay the $2000+ usd a year.

However, I will get a quote from IMG next year...they seem cheaper for sure.

I had used Amadex 7 years ago and switched to BUPA...

Have any of you actually used your insurance? Just curious about denials, etc....

Great question SnoopysMom....No we have not and hope not to, as our insurance is for major medical issues. Everyday things we pay cash....It's affordable and easy to access care. However, before signing with IMG we did contact the medical facility in Merida as well as other people who have used the insurance there and the clinic in Belize city. In Merida they can get per-approval for care and in the Belize City clinic you pay up front and then are reimbursed after the deductible is met....Hope that helps a little.

It seems to come down, to age, where your from, your health , local costs for simple fractures and minor ops and how much disposable income you have available . Ive got a funeral benifits insurance , burn me send me to whoever wants a box of ashes . All the people who took out the wrong insurance , I never meet before they passed !!!

We have BUPA (formerly Amedex). The company paid as promised and provided good service in the pre-approval (of expenses) process.
The negative part - since Amedex changed over to Bupa, the representatives at BUPA itself really don't seem to know/understand well the details of the policies they sell.
If you purchase BUPA I strongly recommend that you purchase through an agent who does understand. PM me if you want contact info for the service provider we use and trust.

Hi Judyann,

I would be interested in your contact for medical insurance and care.

Thank you

Peter
