I was not reciting the act simply making a point that it would be easy enough to spend the money while living here especially if you owned a home.

I was responding to 'Bear' who seemed to be saying that all you needed to do was prove that you had $24,000USD in income and that is not the case. You have to bring it into the country for it to count against the QRP program. You are right, of course, it is not hard at all to spend that much money in Belize especially on AC.

I am pretty sure that the language in the QRP program states that you must put that amount in a Belizean bank each year. Of course you can take it right back out, but your bank statements will be how you show the QRP that you met the yearly requirement. (Any bank that operates in Belize)

Wording within the explanatory notes currently issued by the Belize Tourism Board:

To be designated a Qualified Retired Person under the program, applicants must receive a monthly income of not less than US $2,000 through a pension or annuity that has been generated outside of Belize.

2. Certification
i) When a company grants a pension, that company has to prove that it has been in operation for at least 20 years by submitting proof of registration.

ii) The company that grants the pension shall certify that the pension of no less than US $2,000.00 per month will be forwarded to a reputable financial institution within Belize. This letter must be signed by the manager, president, or by a legal representative of the company.

If i am the person applying for the QRP program and i take my husband along as a dependant, can we use both our incomes (IRA's, 401K) as proof of the 24,000 or will they just look at my income

I believe (but do not know with certainty) that they will look in isolation at the income of the applicant and not at what the total is including dependants. The best source to be sure, however, would be Roshel Godfrey of the Belize Tourism Board. Her email address is : [email protected]

OR I think you can just put the required sum of money in the bank every year (in Belize).

Which is exactly what I will do but it was not sufficient for me to provide proof of a bank balance that could meet this requirement. The BTB wanted proof of my pension. Still suggest that contact with BTB is the best medium for establishing what is required.

RE;Volunteer work. You can get the QRP resideny. They may be selective but our vet works at our weekly clinic and had a volunteer work permit and was able to get QRP and volunteer. I belive in the BTB guidelines is states you can not make any income unlike the monthly visa that says you cant work even for free.
