Winds: A little windy to begin the week with winds mostly from the East at 8 -14 mph

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH: The bonefish were cooperative as normal with everyone able to catch them, even our first timers to saltwater! Roy and Di with their young sons, Matt and Benjamin all got bonefish on their first days. Matt was quick to inform me that he caught 22 fish that day! Their guide was veteran Captain Erlindo who has been with El Pescador since the beginning. Steven, Chris, Al. Ravi, CK, Don, Casey Andrew and Richard all scored big time with the bones.

PERMIT: 3 permit were landed this week with several other hooked up. One was part of Jim's Grand Slam and George and Mark landed 2 others just after the cold front passed through. Their guide was Captain Kechu who was very excited as they both were so close to slamming! They just couldn't get a tarpon to the boat!

TARPON: Several tarpon were hooked but only 2 were landed! Stephen had a large one attack the fly but couldn't get it to stick. A few others were jumped and lost.

SNOOK: Snook were not targeted.

OTHER SPECIES: A large snook was landed, a few jacks, cudas, snappers, groupers, ladyfish, triggerfish added variety for many boats.

FISHING REPORT

March 31, 2013 - April 6, 2013

Weather Conditions: Partly sunny all week, very little precipitation

Winds: A little windy to begin the week with winds mostly from the East at 8 -14 mph

Air Temperature: Mid eighties most of the week dropping to 80 towards the end of the week with lows in the low to seventies.

Water Temperature: Temps in the high 70s

Moonphase: Last Quarter Moon on April 3rd

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH: The bonefish were very cooperative (as usual) with everyone able to catch them, even our first timers to saltwater and some first time fly fishers! Roy and Di with their young sons, Matt and Benjamin all got bonefish on their first days. Matt was quick to inform me that he caught 22 fish that day! Their guide was veteran Captain Erlindo who has been with El Pescador since the beginning. Gordon, Laurie, Michael, Mick, Paula, Katie, Linda, Mark, Brian were successful every time they went bonefishing. Honeymooners Jon and Dee deserved their bonefish pins awards getting on the board the first day. Returning guest Lindsy was sharpening her casting and easily landed lots of bonefish.

PERMIT: Young Michael scored a nice permit with Captain Cesar, Scott landed one with Captain Luis and then one on a day without a guide wading on the west side of the island, Bob persevered and on the windiest day landed a nice 10 pounder with Captain Hilberto. Visiting sportswriter Jan landed a 20 pound permit thanks to Capt. Emir after a fairly quick 30 minute battle.

TARPON: The wind didn't stop our young angler Christopher from jumping a tarpon with tarpon guru Cpt Tomas, followed by Roy who jumped one with Capt. Kechu. Saturday was Tarpon day! Poor Carter had an epic 2 hour battle with a 100 pound fish that eventually chewed through the bite tippet, Capt. Emir chased it to the main land but it was just too tough. Brian landed his first tarpon with Kechu and lost another. Return guests Jim landed a 40 pound tarpon with his guide Tomas' coaching.

OTHER SPECIES: A few snook, ladyfish, a lookdown, a few big jacks, cudas, snappers, added variety for many boats.

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONES - Gotcha, Crazy Charlie's in tan or white, just about anything would work.

FOR PERMIT - Christmas Island Special, Gotcha, Del's Merkin

FOR TARPON - Orange Cockroach, chartreuse toad

This Week's Summary:

Mid week winds put a damper on tarpon fishing but when the winds laid down we had a great day on Saturday. The permit fishing was steady even with the windy center of the week. Special notes go to some great kids that are throwing some serious amounts of fly line - Christopher and Parker. Slightly older, but on track to be great fly fishermen were high schoolers Michael and Carter. --Ed

Guide of the week: Tough choice this week, as all the guides had their moments, so it is a 5 way tie for Luis, Emir, Tomas, Kechu and Cesar all for some hard work that paid off for their guests!

FISHING REPORT

April 7, 2013 - April 13, 2013

Weather Conditions: Clear early in the week, followed by partly cloudy, humid and hazy for the remainder of the week

Air Temperature: Mid to upper eighties most of the week. Winds: 5-10 mph early in the week with winds 10-17 the rest of the week.

Water Temperature: Temps in the upper 70s

Moonphase: New Moon on April 10th

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH: This was our 2 nd week in a row for the Orvis Saltwater Seminars and it was off to a good start with everyone in the group scoring their first bonefish ever on the fly rod the first day out. Congrats to Tim, Tom, Tom, Mark, George, Jim, Dirk, Carl, Scott, Diane and Rob for landing bonefish on their first day. Returning guest John was concentrating on Permit most of the week but was still pleased to settle for a bunch of bonefish until next year. Capt. Erlindo guided Rob and George to some big bonefish one day, one was a nice 5 pounder. Repeat guests Don and his brother Jimmy got into some bones despite the windy conditions. They also brought Shawn and Peter on this trip for some successful bonefishing. Happy 50th birthday to Jimmy! Repeat fly girl Lindsey was in good form, easily catching bonefish daily. Congrats to Michael for his first bonefish as well.

PERMIT: A 15 pound beauty for Brian with the help of Capt. Emir, It was Tom's birthday on Wednesday and to celebrate he landed a permit while Capt. Hilberto was at the helm. Tom was part of the Orvis seminar and clearly he was paying attention as it was his 3rd day ever in saltwater! It took me years to land my first permit! Repeat guest Jim was able to sneak a permit in with his guide Tomas with his wife Lindsey cheering him on. Orvis Seminar guest Tim and his Capt. Sinoe, were tight on a big permit that ended up breaking off as it was running back to Mexico! Captain Luis guided newcomers Stan and Jeff to permit on their first day on the flats! The funny thing is they had no idea that catching permit was difficult or special. Once they were bombarded with congratulations at the bar they started to believe!

TARPON: Sunday - Brian almost slammed but his tarpon broke off after the fly line wrapped on the fighting butt of the rod. (I hate it when that happens.) Most of the week was too windy for the tarpon flats. Winds finally calmed on Friday, but only one boat went after tarpon, the water had cleared and Capt. Tomas helped his guest jump two good size fish (1 was 40 pounds and other acrobat was 25)

OTHER SPECIES: a few snook, ladyfish, a lookdown, a few big jacks, cudas, snappers, added variety for many boats.

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONES - Gotcha, Crazy Charlie's in tan or white, Christmas Island Specials, puffs, foxy gotchas, you name it, it works!

FOR PERMIT - Avalon, Mantis Shrimp tan, Christmas Island Special

FOR TARPON - Black Death, chartreuse toads got a couple tarpon to eat!

MOST IMPROVED CASTER OF THE WEEK: Congrats go out to Lindsay, the new Queen of the Double Haul!

This Week's Summary:

The second Orvis Saltwater seminar was a huge success with half day of classroom and practical work, provided by Orvis' Jim Welch. The class was then followed by 3-1/2 days of fishing. Overall the wind slowed down the catch of tarpon but the guests and guides still managed some good fishing for permit and bones by hiding on the west side of the island, as much out of the wind as possible. Brian asked Kristen to marry him on this trip and she said yes! Wow! --Ed

Guide of the week: Capt. Hilberto for helping Tom get his birthday permit and for the best shore lunch on the planet!

FISHING REPORT

April 14, 2013 - April 20, 2013

Weather Conditions: Partly cloudy, to clear all week, hazy sunshine.

Air Temperature: Mid to upper 80s most of the week. Winds: The winds were unforgiving most of the week at 12- 15 with some stronger gusts. Mostly from the east the winds did not relent until Saturday.

Water Temperature: Temps in the high 70s.

Moonphase: First Quarter Moon on April 18th.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

GRAND SLAM: Eric came through on his second day at EP with a grand slam with Capt Kechu and more importantly his wife Hannah who accompanied Eric for the first time today. He will never fish without her again!

BONEFISH: Tom from Italy caught a bunch of bones his day out with Capt. Vince. Husband and wife team Wyn and Maggie landed their share of bonefish with ease and are mastering the double haul. Mike, Andrew, Dan, Ben made the bonefish honor roll as well with their first bonefish ever. Wade, Jack and Matthew all boated bonefish with Capt. Luis. A couple groups from the UK this week include Kate, Rob, Andy, Gary, Mike and Peter - all got their first bonefish on their first day of saltwater flats fishing.

PERMIT: You are going to hate this Michaela, from Italy hooked a permit on her first cast ever in saltwater, and yes she landed it! Her guide Capt. Vince had to explain how hard that is to achieve. Fred and Ryan said they had many shots at big and small permit all day long on Wednesday but none would bite. Ben, Andy, Brian and Mike all landed permit on the business outing to El Pescador, Their guides were Capt. Vince and JR. It was a great week for permit. Eric's permit was the lynch pin for his grand slam outing.

TARPON: Our long time friend George finally got a break in the weather and pounced on the chance to land a nice 50 pound fish late in the week for the tarpon king of the week. George and Judy have been coming to El Pescador for over 25 years! Wow! They are fishing with Capt. Alex. Eric landed a small tarpon to complete his grand slam.

Guide of the week: Capt. Kechu for the grand slam for Hannah and Eric.

FISHING REPORT

April 21, 2013 - April 27, 2013

Weather Conditions: Partly cloudy to clear all week.

Air Temperature: Mid to upper 80s all week. Winds: The winds all week at 7- 12 mostly from the East.

Water Temperature: Some of the flats reached 80s on calm days.

Moonphase: Full Moon on the 25th.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

GRAND SLAM: Eric came through on his second day at EP with a grand slam with Capt Kechu and more importantly his wife Hannah who accompanied Eric for the first time today. He will never fish without her again!

BONEFISH: Marion and Peter were able to land bonefish without a problem thanks to the good spirit and fish finding skills of Captain Erlindo. Erlindo's boat is one of a few in the fleet that has a lean bar on the front deck. The bar was a great help for Marion (AKA "Lefty") and her left side disability. Mike, Pete, Felipe, Richard, Tom, Al, Luke, Rusty, Ian, and Andy all had no issues with landing bonefish. Rob and Andy enjoyed an overnight trip to Bonefish Island and were rewarded with many bones at dusk and dawn. The trip is 2 days of guided fishing with an overnight on the island it was perfect weather for it!

PERMIT: Mike and Pete from the UK added more permit to start the week with Capt. Emir. Capt. Kechu was on a TV show shoot with anglers Sandy and Michael who both landed permit on their first days. I can't wait to see that episode of Belize Outdoors on the World Fishing Network. Tom got a permit with Capt. Hilberto early in the week. Barney landed a permit with the tutelage of Captain Luis.

TARPON: George continued getting fish this week with several hookups each day with his Guide Capt. Alex. Felipe hooked three on Monday thanks in part to good casting and Captain Cesar's advice. Captain Vince was able to get his angler into some tarpon with a nice 60 pound fish that may have set a new high jump record for tarpon, Vince said he had to look up at this fish when he rocketed out of the water just 30 feet away. Vince is 5' 8" and his poling platform is 4 feet above sea level you do the math. Holy tarpon jump! Grandfather/Grandson team of John and John teamed up with Capt. Cesar to land a tarpon apiece. They are rightly proud of their tarpon pin awards

OTHER SPECIES: Barracudas, jacks, ladyfish, and snappers, groupers, triggerfish.

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONES - Christmas Island Specials, Gotcha, Crazy Charlie, and Turneffe Crab

FOR PERMIT - Avalon, Christmas Island Special

FOR TARPON - Olive Toad, Tan Toad, and Chartreuse toad

This Week's Summary:

A week of perfect fishing weather finally settled in opening up all the flats throughout the area. Lots of permit were fooled with tarpon fishing making a big appearance. The migratory tarpon are right around the corner. --Ed

Guide of the week: Capt. Erlindo for his expertise and patience in guiding Marion and Pete into some fantastic fishing that was more special to them than Erlindo can imagine.

FISHING REPORT

April 28, 2013 - May 4, 2013

Weather Conditions: Partly cloudy skies opened up to a beautiful week of sunshine with occasional rain showers.

Air Temperature: High 84, low 72. Winds: NW 5 - 15 at the beginning of the week, then went ESE 10 - 20, arriving at our wonderful E 5 - 10

Water Temperature: Temps in the high 70s

Moonphase: Full Moon on the 25th.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH: Ian and Andy were here from Scotland for two weeks! We all were so sad to see them leave. They did end up with their bonefish pins! Amazing. They had a great time with Captain Sinoe - yes, several days of visual grand slams, but in the end, it's the "ghost of the flats," that won them over. Kevin and Lian were here last year, and they returned this year with eighteen of their family members! Wow. It was incredible to watch everyone soak up as much as they could about learning to fly fish the flats. Reggie - long time retired, had never fished before in his life. Any kind of fishing. Congratulations Reggie on your bonefish on fly. Dale brought Jon and George here to EP and they left with several bonefish on fly. They also left stronger casters! Terry and Gail - congratulations on your bones. Hena also landed several bones with Captain Raton. It was an honor to meet Karin Olson Wilson from Argentina. She grew up on the Majeo River which is world renown. She landed her first bonefish on fly here in Belize. Her son Matt and husband Henry ventured out beyond bonefish in search for permit, but were able to land a few bones in between hunting for palamenta. David and Donna were here to experience their first time fly fishing our Ambergris Caye flats as well. Donna is one of the most determined women I have met in twenty years of fly fishing. I'm excited about her fishing future. They both landed their first bonefish on fly.

PERMIT: The permit fishing has been challenging and rewarding! "Shino" landed two permit with Captain Cesar. He tied up all of his own leaders and Cesar said he is an amazing caster - "Could get it right there!" David had some great shots with Captain Kechu but they didn't cooperate.

TARPON: Shino landed a beautiful fifty pounder with Captain Cesar on his last day fishing before his wedding! Kaz landed a nice thirty plus with Captain Tomas and they had another one they lost. Ian and Andy tried several days with Captain Sinoe - they had good shots and tons of follows, but no eats. Kelly was a happy camper when she threw her live bait to Mr. Tarpon, and the water exploded! Her husband Jeff took this beautiful shot of her with her tarpon in the water giving it a big ol hug. Why not? The guides are reporting migratory tarpon down by Long Caye and some big girls showing at Savannah as well. It's tarpon season!

OTHER SPECIES: Dale landed a nice 15 lb snook on a red and white fly and offered a beautiful plate of my favorite eating fish in addition to dinner. Thank you Dale. Dale had a huge barracuda on fly.if you haven't had a barracuda on fly; you are missing out on some serious fun!

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONES - Gotcha, Crazy Charlie's in tan or white, just about anything would work - mostly size 8 and 6, some with weed guards.

FOR PERMIT - Our standard never gives up: Orange Christmas Island Special in size 4 or 6, Avalon in size 4, and Gotcha's in size 4 or 6. Some crabs in 6, tan. Mantis shrimp, tan and bead chain eyes - it works.

FOR TARPON - Chartreuse toad, slow easy twitchy retrieve - depends on what the fish is doing. Watch and listen. On Savannah we are using 40 and 50 lb shock. Let the fly settle, and then move it. White, tan, pink - bunnies and toads. . Really fun tarpon fishing in skinny water right now! Favorite color - orange.

This Week's Summary:

The big migratory tarpon have been seen down by Long Caye and Savannah. Shino landed a 50 lb tarpon, Kaz had a 30+ lb beauty and Kelly got hers with live bait! Shino landed some gorgeous permit and there were so many bonefish landed we couldn't keep track. Dale landed a beautiful snook and barracuda on fly! Fun week!

We just love it when our "Family" returns here to El Pescador. Thank you Kevin and Lian for coming back this year with your family! And a big Welcome Home to Dirk and Kaz who have returned this week also.

Thank you Ed for being the best "job share" partner in the world. Not everyone can just run out the door and release the reins! I was traveling in the States last month working with our fly shops that send their guests here to El Pescador. We built strong relationships to help make sure our guests receive the very best. We want you to dream big and show up prepared. A big huge THANK YOU to The Fly Shop, The Golden West Fly Fishers, Cutthroat Anglers, Front Range Anglers, Tailwaters, Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters and the Orvis Bellevue Store for hosting my presentations about fishing here at El Pescador.

It's tarpon season everyoneso start tying up your tarpon flies and we'll see you soon. --Lori-Ann

Guide of the week: Captain Cesar for getting Shino into two permit one tarpon and several bonefish this week. What was more impressive is that Cesar does not speak Japanese and Shino knows very little English. They communicated beautifully all week. It was great to see. Thank you!

FISHING REPORT

May 5, 2013 - May 11, 2013

Weather Conditions: Partly cloudy skies cleared to sunny and beautiful conditions after the front moved through.

Air Temperature: High 84, low 72. Winds: NW 5 - 15 at the beginning of the week, then went ESE 10 - 20, arriving at our wonderful E 5 - 10

Water Temperature: Temps in the high 70s

Moonphase: New Moon on the 10th

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH: We were honored to host, for the second time, Buccaneers and Bones filmed by Orion Media. We had a perfect week for fishing after the front moved out and bonefish were happy. So happy, that Orion producer, Kevin Faye was casting off our dock and landed a really nice big 4 plus bone on fly. Yep, right from the dock. That's how the week started. From there, we had anglers landing 20 - 30 "schoolies" - to stalking bigger bones in challenging skinny water. Lefty showed up and said he watched Tom Brokow make his best cast and landed a five pound bonefish. It was really fun to see Tom get light up talking about the experience. Sue and Aldon landed their first bonefish on fly. Craig and Colleen landed several on spin. Congratulations everyone a great week of bonefishing!

PERMIT: Emir called. This time.Yvon Chouinard had landed a twenty plus permit, which became part of his SLAM, AND THEN Will Benson landed a twenty plus permit as well. They both ate crabs. Big water.

TARPON: Savannah was on fire but they weren't a "gimmie." Meredith McCord landed a nice forty pounder with Captain Cesar. They said they had several shots but the fish didn't want to eat. Yvon landed his tarpon with Captain Emir in a lagoon first thing in the morning - yes, adding to his slam. Will Benson also landed a nice tarpon on fly with Captain Emir. Colleen landed one on live bait with Captain Tomas. Basically, we had several eats, follows.and nothing for the fly fishermen. Three landed on fly this week, one one spin The migratory tarpon are starting to move in. The guides are seeing the bigger fish on Savannah and Captain Luis said he saw several down by Long Caye.

OTHER SPECIES: Will landed a nice 12 pound snook on fly with Captain Emir. Weird, we are seeing a lot of snook over on the West coast. We usually see them in our winter months, but we have seen quite a few this spring! Barracuda - we love them. Several landed on fly and spin this week. A 25 lb plus jack tore up Lefty's right hand. The reel got in the way! And yes, there is always more to the story.

Guide of the week: Captain Emir for getting Yvon Chouinard into his first Grand Slam! The permit was a twenty plus. And then his boat partner, Will Benson landed a twenty plus permit that same day. Emir's favorite, the NW wind. And how wonderful that Captain Carlos was honored "The Life Achievement Award" from El Pescador during Buccaneers and Bones. One of the highlights this week was seeing Captain Carlos Sr., Captain Carlos aka Kechu and Captain Emir all here this week as the Grand Slam plaque was added to the famed wall. Generations of gifted fishermen and guides. Thank You!

This Week's Summary:

We were honored here at El Pescador to host for the second time "Buccaneers and Bones." What a blast. Tom Brokaw landed his biggest bonefish, Lefty told him it was the best cast he had ever seen Tom make.Yvon get's his first Grand Slam with Captain Emir, Meredith rocked it out the first day with Captain Cesar landing a nice forty pound tarpon.A twenty five something jack ripped up Lefty's hand, and what was super cool was that Orion's director, Kevin Faye, landed a really nice four pound bone right from the dock! "Start rolling.and whamoo!" One landed big bone landed on fly from the dock. That was a VERY good omen. Thank you to everyone. We are an extended family at El Pescador. Thank you everyone for a great week of hanging out, fly fishing and most importantbuilding exciting relationships. I look forward to seeing everyone in the future as we pursue our quest to understand and explore more about saltwater fly fishing. The fish don't care if you just started, or if you are a pro. What matters is that is that we have fun trying new tricks and practicing what we have learned along the way.

FISHING REPORT

May 12, 2013 - May 18, 2013

Weather Conditions: The week started with some overcast skies and an occasional thunder storm. Tides high at 10 am moving later in the week. The week progressed with sunny conditions with a prevailing E wind 10 - 20.

Air Temperature: High 90, low 74. Winds: East winds most of the week. ENE 5 - 20, then moved ESE 10 - 20.

Water Temperature: Temps in the high 70s, low 80s

Moonphase: First Quarter May 18th

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH: The beach fishing in front of the lodge has been great. Usually ignored, those tails popping out of the turtle grass flats called us out. We call these double point fish. Carson stalled out his departure depression by landing a nice 4 pounder off the dock on fly. Andy Bowen was a great host for his trip fro Cohutta Fishing Company. His whole group landed several bonefish. Congratulations to: Andy, David, Ken (who also slammed!), his son Drew, Terry and his crazed fish head son Kane, Bill and Judy - who celebrated their anniversary here as well, and Greg - who all landed several bonefish on fly. Frank and Nancy were here from New Orleans and enjoyed catching bone on fly, but I think Nancy is most excited about learning her double haul! Mike and Mills, it was great to see you here again and I know you wanted that permit, but congrats on some nice bonefishing! Tom and Sue adventured out in the lagoon and caught bones, and so did Dane who was here from Crested Butte Outfitters. Nice job everyone. Remember, bonefishing is the heart and soul of our sport and keeps us on our game!

PERMIT: Shout out to Father and son duo Ken and Drew! They both landed permit on fly with Captain Emir, and Ken's went toward his slam! Dane also landed two permit with Captain Emir and that also went toward his slam! And the really weird one was Mike, who was tarpon fishing with Captain Luis, and he cast a black death to a tarpon and a permit ate it! This also went toward Mike's slam! So, 5 permit landed on fly this week.

TARPON: No doubt about it, tarpon season is here! Savannah, Hicks and Long Caye all with fish. Not all the fish were taking flies this week, but anglers had a chance to cast to several fish - which is good for learning how to stay focused when fish appear and you need to make that cast! The three most important and only tarpon landed on fly was Captain Luis getting Mike into a 60 plus poon, and Captain Emir getting Ken into his 50 pound tarpon, and then Captain Emir getting Dane into his "big" tarpon as well. All these tarpon went toward "first" Grand Slams for Mike, Ken and Dane. Dane has great footage - and Drew is going to You Tube his dad's slam. So, we will keep you posted!

OTHER SPECIES: Weird that we are seeing so many snook! Chances at Mr. Snook with fly and spin - snook won. Barracuda is being target more all the time and we had some dandies landed on both fly and spin.

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONES - Gotcha, Crazy Charlie's in tan or white, just about anything would work - mostly size 8 and 6, some with weed guards

Guide of the week: Well, of course, Captain Emir was responsible for Two Grand Slams!

This Week's Summary:

The week flew by! It was wonderful to see our return "Family" guests. Thank you Mike and Jenny, Mills and Carol Ann, Donald and Doreen for returning to see us! You make great neighbors; I think you should move here! We had the lodge filled with laughter and generations of people taking time out of their lives to pursue their curious natures and explore Belize. Andy was a great trip leader from Cohutta Fishing Company, and we look forward to seeing Dane in the future with Crested Butte Outfitters. What was really amazing is that we had THREE GRAND SLAMS THIS WEEK! "Firsts" for everyone. So, as we listened to these amazing fishing stories, dreams were realized and new seeds planted for future trips. There is nothing more that warms our hearts here at El Pescador than to see our guests leave with big smiles and relaxed shoulders. It was wonderful to meet you all and we look forward to seeing you returning to our dock soon! Thank you.

If you have any questions or would like more information, please email us at [email protected]. Happy fishing! L-A
