All you ever wanted to know about the Venezuelan crisis. This link comes from TV without borders and a couple of the articles mention the USA....but they're negative comments so it shouldn't be an issue here. It appears Cuba may take a role in this crisis.....we'll see.

Venezuela's plummeting oil sales to the U.S., its biggest export market, are exacerbating a collapse in the nation's debt securities.
President Nicolas Maduro faces a shortage of U.S. currency that's caused consumer prices to soar 56 percent and foreign reserves to plunge to a decade-low of $21 billion. Petroleos de Venezuela SA, the state-run oil producer known as PDVSA, is sending hundreds of thousands of barrels a day to China to repay loans totaling more than $40 billion since 2008, at a time when its production is shrinking.

Probably not the time to buy Venezuelan bonds

It would appear that big oil is against Venezuela's nationalizing of its oil reserves. Guess they aren't getting a cut of that pie. And as big oil goes, so follows the US and other oil producing countries.

Will certainly affect countries in Petrocaribe, including Belize:

Belize has to pay 40% of the fuel bill upfront, within 90 days, but the remaining 60% of the cost is to be paid over a period of 25 years. There is a 2-year grace period, so Belize has 23 years to repay Venezuela at 1% interest per annum.

And more:

Rememba the 20 million for Housing under Said? Long history.

Chartered planeloads flying to Venezuela for eye surgeries, all expenses paid.

Generous Embassy

Whole lot of things.

Well, it appears that Venezuela imports products from America. The only way to offset the cost of those imports and exchange currency, dollar for dollar is to export the same dollar amount to America. That coupled with a debt to China is obviously causing economic problems for Venezuela. It's great to believe in socialist ideals but the first step is to stabilize the economy. This is a case where ideology has gotten in the way of pragmatism.

Chavez got in the way of whatever socialism he or they were seeking. The country has suffered from his cult of personality and his decisions. Belize and other countries benefitted. Hugo just wanted to be loved.
