Saturday Farmers market in San Ignacio Belize

People, Market and Love

The San Ignacio market is a must for everyone who lives in Belize and for those who visit us. Its situated literally in down town San Ignacio, left of centre of town and right next to the Macal river which was a cornerstone of the transportation and communication industries of western Belize.

This market is incredible. Its small and there are stalls that are open every day serving fresh fruit and vegetables. Then something incredible happens starting Friday afternoon. More and more tents start going up, meaning more and more opportunities to get you something that perhaps would not be there between Snday and Friday morning. Certainly, to know what ‘that’ is you must go to market. We suggest Saturday morning.

The San Ignacio market is a place of culture. A place where one can see the interesting multi ethnicity of the country of Belize. One can see the differences in the faces of the people or, in the multitude of different food that are being prepared and the languages and accents attached to the different languages.

At the end of the day, the market is a place to get your produce fresh. Belizeans support their market. This is a great place to come closest to the western culture and at the same time pick up your fruits and vegetables for the next few days. One very popular thing for visitors to San Ignacio, who travel to the islands, is to stop at the market and pick up the fresh produce they may not be able to get fresh (enough) on an island or next destination.

The San Ignacio market on Saturdays specifically, turns into a fresh fruit and produce centre and flea market! Anything and everything can be found there on a Saturday. From used clothes and new clothes; shoes, old tools, puppies, chickens, plastics and hand craft.

Its an interesting place to buy gifts and that ‘one thing’ you never thought you would need. Its amazing that now you can also get your heat “cured” plantain leaves where your delicious tamales will be wrapped for cooking.

Don’t forget to go to the San Ignacio market when you are in western Belize. If nothing else, its a great pace to begin your immersion into the multi ethnic world of Belize and the place where you can first test your palate. We think you will get both and perhaps even go back for more!

Organic Produce Available in San Ignacio Market

Pro-Organic Belize (POB), working with the San Antonio Cayo Organic Growers Association (SACOGA) is responsible for making organic produce available in the San Ignacio open air market. POB was formed as a group in November 2014 by a group of individuals who are committed to sourcing healthy food in Cayo by furthering the organic agriculture movement in Belize. The mission statement is "To support and promote San Antonio Organic Growers Association and other organic initiatives in Belize." POB and SACOGA have been working with Central Farm Organic Division and Sustainable Harvest International to form a participatory guarantee system (PGS) with the famers and customers to ensure that produce is grown using organic standards. The PGS concept embodies principles of co-participation by sharing responsibility while helping promote and ensure organic standards and integrity. On Earth Day, April 22, 2015 POB and SACOGA reached agreement on a formalized three phase transition to organic PGS.

International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movement (IFOAM) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) standards are guidelines to help shape a workable system suited to Belize. The goal is for Belize farmers and consumers to become educated about the benefits of organic agriculture using sustainable agriculture farming methods and growing food that is free of agro-chemicals. The motto of Pro-Organic Belize is: "Know your farmer, know your vendor equals safer food for Belize." Some vendors at the San Ignacio Cayo open air market are featuring signs on produce bins, Grown in Belize using Agro-chemicals, Organically Grown in Belize, Imported using Agro-chemical making it easier for shoppers to make food choices.

There is now an easy way for consumers to purchase fresh organic produce at the San Ignacio Open Air Market on Saturday mornings. There is a growing customer base who have been pleased with the system of ordering fruits and vegetables by phone or e-mail and picking up and paying for produce from the SACOGA booth. To order produce for delivery to the San Ignacio Open Air Market on Saturdaym, please send an e-mail to [email protected] or call Abdias Mesh, 674- 8064. Once you are on the customer list, about midweek you will receive a message listing what produce is available and what the prices are.

POB and SACOGA meet in the San Ignacio area once or twice a month. Meetings are open to all who want to support organics in Belize. Send a message to Pro-Organic Belize proorganicbelize@ gmail.com or call 677-9658.

Look for us at the National Agriculture Trade Show fair booth B83 on May 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in Belmopan and also find us on Facebook.

The bustling Saturday Market in San Ignacio, Belize. The entire town and surrounding areas gather to sell fruit, vegetables, kitchen supplies and household items. The market is mainly occupied by Mestizos but Mayans, Caribbean Creoles and even white Mennonite farmers sell their goods here. A wide range of fruits, veggies, and spices can be found. Little makeshift restaurants sell freshly made quesadillas, burritos and local plates.

San Ignacio Market, Cayo, Belize

The weekly Saturday market in San Ignacio, Cayo, is not only the source of groceries, but also the source of much social life in this small town. Despite its small size, (20,000 including neighboring sister city Santa Elena), San Ignacio is nonetheless the second largest town in Belize and home to its largest market.

The fruits and vegetables of this rich agricultural region are on display in abundance and freshness.
