The San Pedro Police Department informs all 2015 Municipal Election candidates that all rules and regulations in reference to the election process will be strictly implemented. Officer in Charge of San Pedro Police, Superintendent Luis Castellanos has stated that extra measures will be taken to ensure that the Town Council Elections, scheduled for Wednesday, March 4th, run smoothly.

In addition, campaigners are advised that rowdy behavior will not be tolerated and that no form of political campaign will be allowed within the 100-yard buffer area. "Elections are right around the corner and we are preparing our officers ahead of time so that they are ready to handle the event. Within the next few weeks, we will be calling a meeting with all candidates and explain to them the rules and regulations of the Municipal Elections. We will also explain to them the behavior that is expected by the San Pedro Police Department in regards to party followers and campaigning on Election Day," said Superintendent Castellanos.

The polling station in San Pedro will be at the San Pedro High School. No political booth, banners, signs or campaigning will be allowed within a 100 yard radius of the polling area. This area includes the section of Spider Lily Street that runs from the beach to the junction of Laguna Drive (all the section in front of the high school entrance) and extends midway down Seagull Street. "One of the main rules that all candidates and campaigners need to adhere to is the 100-yard buffer area. We do not want any disorderly behavior in the polling station. We will be very strict with this rule and we will hold all the parties responsible for ensuring their party members also follow this rule," said Superintendent Castellanos.

The San Pedro Police will also be monitoring campaign efforts leading up to elections in an effort to avoid altercations. Superintendent Castellanos would like to take the opportunity to advise all island residents to try their best to make the 2015 Municipal Elections a peaceful one.

Nomination Day is set for February 11th

With municipal elections just over two weeks away, political parties across the country are preparing for the first big step before the electorates go to the polls. The first big show of strength will take place on Nomination Day, which has been set by the Governor General of Belize for Wednesday February 11th. The Elections and Boundaries Department, the legal body that will take charge of the nomination and election process, have been meeting with the political parties to educate them about the process.

For Nomination Day, The People's United Party (PUP) will be allowed the hours of 10AM and midday to be nominated. From midday to 2PM, any independent or third party candidates will be allowed for nomination. Meanwhile the United Democratic Party (UDP) has been allowed from 2PM to 4PM to be nominated. Griffith said that political representatives on the island have agreed to that format in their first meeting. He also indicated that boundaries and other rules for Election's Day have also been agreed upon.

21 candidates in the race for SPTC elections

First to arrive to be nominated were the seven candidates of the PUP. The candidates and their supporters had assembled on the beach front of incumbent Councilor Gualberto "Wally" Nuez. Once they had gathered their supporting crowd, they paraded through the principal streets of San Pedro Town. Nomination Day-16They were in to show their strength and by all appearance, they did not lack energy as the supporters honked horns and blasted music in the grand old style of the PUP. They eventually came to a stop in front of the San Pedro Town Council on Barrier Reef Drive shortly around 10:30AM, still full of energy.

Shortly around 12:30 the VIP candidates made to the SPTC building along with a few family members, they entered into the town hall to be nominated. Candidates for the VIP include Mayoral Candidate Robert "Bobby Lopez, and councilor candidates Mary Boiton, Francisco Salgado, Fatima Aragon Reyes, Amalio Requea, Virginio "Bill" Henkis and Martin Dawson. The candidates nominated each other except for Henkis who was nominated by his two daughters Yanira Henkis and Melissa Henkis. In addressing the media, Lopez blasted the both the PUP and the UDP for neglecting the island. "It is time to get rid of the two political parties. Ever since we gained self-government, we have had the same of both parties. They have enriched themselves, leaving the Belizeans deeper into poverty. This VIP team is giving the islanders an option to vote out corruption."

The incumbent United Democratic Party were third to make their appearance. They assembled in front of Central Park and after mustering their crowd, the red team marched through the streets of San Pedro. Accompanied by loud music, the crowd, who was in a celebratory mood, eventually made its way to the San Pedro Town Council. After arriving around 2:30PM, one by one, each member of the UDP 7 walked up to the office of the Town Council to be nominated. UDP and PUP host Pre-election rallies

The two major political parties on the island, The United Democratic Party (UDP) and the People's United Party (PUP) both held separate pre-election rallies over the weekend. The UDP held their rally on the night of Saturday February 28th, while the PUP held theirs during the day on Sunday March 1st. Each of the parties managed to flex their strength as they brought in some of their leaders for the event.

For its part UDP brought in the Prime Minister of Belize Honorable Dean Barrow who was greeted by a large crowd of supporters who had assembled at Maya Island Air. While music blared, the crowd of supporters marched through the streets of San Pedro, jumping up to the beat of their political songs. The parade culminated at the San Pedro Central Park where the rally followed.

Leading up to their rally, PUP Town Council Candidates and supporters greeted Party leader Francis Fonseca, who was on the island for the day on Saturday, February 28th showing support and visiting residents across La Isla Bonita. The following day, the PUP showcased their strength in an all-day beach party at the Boca del Rio Park. All candidates, along with PUP Belize Rural South Standard Bearer Elito Arceo delivered inspirational speeches to those in attendance.

Election analysis by Aria Lightfoot

My initial analysis of the elections are as follows: As I predicted UDP would win most of the seats as it was obvious - what the election tells me is that the party supporters went out and voted but the independents stayed out of it..PUP has a major crisis which was evident two elections ago. PUP refuses to Reform. PUP may love their dinasours but they are a constant reminder of the wanton corruption that spiraled out of control during their terms. Their strategy seem to be win by default and that strategy is failing. They are not serious about reform by failure to reform themselves ...They also seem to be extremely sensitive to constructive criticism and respond with propaganda and vitroil which only serves to remind people about their sordid past. The voting population has evolved. Social media is a real watch dog phenomenon. There are people who are addressing issues that were not possible before, Belizeans outside the normal bread and butter reach of politicians are bringing important issues to the forefront and people are watching and listening - one more thing -PUP has waged war on the diaspora, a very powerful group who still has a great deal of influence on family and friends at home ...just [#%!] poor politics all around. - UDP must be very careful that they don't create voter fatigue, and this win doesn't make then complacent- they must really become humble because there is a sleeping giant of voters who can make it all go away by the next Elections. UDP must now take governing to the next level. People are looking for government that represents the people. I think Mr Barrow has emerged as a force to be reckon with politically. He must now conduct deep analysis of how he plans to proceed if he wants a 3 peat. PUP must go back to the drawing board and do a deep soul searching analysis and then put their dinasours to bed. They must offer people an alternative and stop with the "you are more corrupted than us" approach. Reform, reform, reform and one more thing - change the image of An emerging family dynasty. Also, I am not sure what to make of OW- was it a rejection of Gappy or did the sugar cane crisis play a role on what is emerging? 3rd parties it seems the iron is hot once again. PUP has weakened even further! 3rd parties must find a way to attract supporters and financing to do the necessary ground work..my big question is this: Was the election a rejection of Ashcroft and anything that reminds Belizeans of him ? He emerged just before elections with litigation and with Audrey that sent Belize social media into a frenzy! Is the election a sign of hope for third parties ? Was it a complete rejection of PUP and partially party politics ? Who knows but there is much to dig for into the psche of the people who stayed at home!

UDP 7 wins 2015 Municipal Elections in San Pedro; Daniel Guerrero re-elected as Mayor!

The United Democratic Party (UDP) has maintained control of the San Pedro Town Council as all seven candidates won the Municipal election 2015 on Wednesday, March 4th. They defeated the full slates from the People's United Party (PUP) and the Vision Inspired by the People (VIP).

UDP managed to control all 13 polling boxes, capturing the win for their full slate.

Easter Winds Blow In A UDP Municipal Election Sweep

Yesterday was the BIG day. Municipal elections in San Pedro and across the country. Our town has been covered in party paraphenalia. In order of swag amounts, UDP (the incumbents & red), PUP (blue) and the newest independent party, VIP (yellow). T-shirts, hats, FLAGS, hand outsthe stuff is everywhere.

The polls closed at 6 and then the ballots (there are just about 7500 registered voters in San Pedro) counted and thenthe celebrating begins.

And then at night, correspondent Finn was there to take pictures of the celebrations when UDP swept the ticket.

"Betcha by Golly, Wow"

I've felt 'part' of this place (and I know it's the same for Rose) ever since we first visited. And that sense of 'belonging' has grown with every year that has passed. But yesterday I truly felt PART' of it. So what was so special. So momentous about yesterday? The Municipal Elections that's what. So what, they happen every three years. Ah, but yesterday I got to vote.

At long last I could use my VOTER's ID card and exercise my right!

I'd intended to get to the Polling Station at the San Pedro High School shortly after it opened at 07.00 hours but I spent too much time looking at emails from people thinking of buying property in Belize through Pelican Properties Limited/Belize Real Estate Limited and I ended up having to rush to make the 08.00 appointment I had for a fishing trip. Don't worry though, I'll get back to the 'Elections later!

I arrived at the TMM Charter's dock five minutes late ( considered to be early in Belize!) and we set off within minutes and headed south
