As the rebar rusts, it expands and breaks the concrete

I was hoping this might lighten up the road rant a little.

Ha, that's a good video, and true.

A new twist on the speed bumps today. 2x4's stretched across the road to stop traffic so that sales people can run out onto the road, deliver information on the joys of Vacation Sharing and relay an invitation to drink at the casino. It's a great sales technique, and allows visitors to experience one of the true joys of a visit to our jewel.

Yes, ran into those on my bike ride on Monday. At least the timeshare hustlers aren't sitting at the bridge hassling people while they pay anymore (for now).

Although the steel rebar's natural tendency is to undergo corrosion, the alkaline environment of concrete (pH of 12 to 13) provides steel with corrosion protection. At this high pH, a thin oxide layer forms on the steel and prevents metal atoms from dissolving. This passive film does not actually stop corrosion; but it reduces the corrosion rate to an insignificant level. Because of concrete's inherent protection, reinforcing steel does not corrode in the majority of concrete elements and structures. Corrosion can occur only after the passivating layer is destroyed. Now if the concrete layer around the rebar is thin and wears quickly, then salt can get to the rebar and begin to corrode.

It's a start, and on the positive side the road placement no matter how poor has solved issues of Right of Way and property boundaries. It could be considered a foundation for a proper road later.

Another crash from homemade speedbumps today. This time it's at Captain Morgans.
Traffic and the Town Board need to step in.
The section of road at tress Cocos is finished and opened today.
