Unless you are really particular, they have most good brands. I'm not a Scotch drinker but my wife likes the Johnny Walker Double Black. I drink Canadian Club and it's there: my real estate friend drinks Jack Daniels and it's there also.. Many brands and very reasonable.

Are the stores in the departure area duty free?

There seems to be a bit of confusion here. Coming into Belize you use the Duty Free stores next to baggage claim and before Customs. The duty free stores at the departing gates are only for people returning to the USA (or other country). You are not allowed to buy from those stores if you are just there to take a local flight in country. You will have to show a ticket/boarding pass on an international departing flight to purchase there.

actually, My son was down there at the end of September and was able to buy duty free before jumping over the San Pedro. Might just be some of the stores go by the rules and other are more relaxed.....

Your son would have purchased in the arrivals duty free stores, not the International departures stores.
