COVID-19 on a Regional Context per the Office of Director of Health Services

With soaring numbers, we cannot forget that all neighbouring countries as can be seen in the graphs are having increasing numbers.

The LAC map shows comparative numbers from May 4th & 11th and the other infographic how the last 6 countries (in terms of decreasing numbers of COVID-19) are comparing.

The data is as compiled by IDB from multiple sources.

COVID-19 update:

This is the regional update as numbers continue to rise in countries all around.

Costa Rica and Nicaragua are the two countries who don't seem to have significant increases in their numbers as all aim to contain their epidemic curve.

We all remain vigilant under new norms.

Belize Now Only Nation on Mainland of Americas With (Much) More Than 1 Day COVID Free

And, Belize has a lot to protect. It is now the only nation on the mainland of the Americas which has gone more than 1 day without detecting a positive case of COVID 19.

This distinction comes after a positive case was detected in Suriname on Saturday. That tiny south American nation had been without a case for 44 days up to that point. But, on Saturday, a Brazilian two had slipped into their country illegally tested positive for COVID 19.

So - to repeat - Belize is now the only non island nation in the hemisphere which has gone more than 1 day without detecting a positive case. And, presently, this country has gone 36 days without a negative test!

The island nation of Dominica has gone 38 days while Saint Kitts and Nevis has gone 28 days. The island territories of St. Barth's and Anguilla have both almost gone 50 days.

Over 1,400 tests done; Belize remain COVID-19 free

This is our data up until 3 pm today.

A further 72 samples were done today, all negative - the random sampling continues.
We note that neighbouring Othon P. Blanco municipality has a total of 46 total confirmed cases with 16 of these active and Guatemala now has a total of 2,265 cases and the two entities continue to report increasing numbers.

Physical distancing remains a vital element for prevention.

Let's all keep safe.

Scaling Down Random Testing for COVID-19 in Belize

The Ministry of Health is scaling down its random testing for the coronavirus now that it is in week-seven without any new cases. The ministry has been randomly swabbing and testing persons, specifically frontline workers from healthcare facilities, immigration and customs officers at entry points as well as police to check if there are any positive cases of COVID-19. So far, those tests have all returned negative and the recommendation is for the scaling down on the number of testing days. Director of Health Services Doctor Marvin Manzanero speaks about the testing approach going forward.

Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services

"It is still ongoing since the last cases that we have reported more than six weeks ago. We have duplicated the number of tests that have been done and almost all of that has been as a result of random sampling. But we are having what's called a low yield, or no yield even, because we are not finding any cases. So we are going to scale down the number of testing days from three to two as of next week. We are still going to continue to actively look for people who may have any severe acute respiratory illness or any of those symptoms that have been described for COVID-19; those patients will be swabbed and samples checked. But in terms of the random sampling, since we are not finding any cases, we may have to scale that down. We have the ability now to do close to six thousand tests, if not more, with some reagents still pending to come in. But it doesn't mean that you would just squander your six thousand. Remember you have to potentially scale up your testing once you identify any more cases. Some cases in the Central American region have expressed that they are running low or they don't have supplies to be doing PCR testing. Same concern has been expressed by Caribbean counterparts so that routinely, they are not recommending that we do random sampling on people that are asymptomatic and that's part of why we are scaling down our testing approach."

Ministry of Health Confirms 19th Case of COVID-19

The Ministry of Health informs the public that a 19th case of COVID-19 was confirmed earlier today. This comes after the last four cases reported 53 days ago.

The case is that of a 27-year-old male who arrived on Saturday, May 23rd, from a cruise ship as part of the established repatriation process for Belizeans. The male is asymptomatic for COVID-19 and was detected as part of the routine testing being done on all those placed under mandatory quarantine which is a requirement before their release. The contact tracing for this individual is starting now and the due process of informing the cruise ship and relevant counterparts has started.

The Ministry of Health continues with its enhanced surveillance across the country and urges all to continue to exercise the necessary prevention measures.

COVID-19 UPDATE.

As with all positive cases for SARS-CoV2, a detailed mapping exercise is conducted and decisions are taken based on those findings.

In the case of case #19, it is that of a young male, asymptomatic who came from the cruise ship that arrived on May 23rd and who upon arrival went into a mandatory quarantine at the Radisson.

We note that the10 persons that were swabbed from that first arriving group were being tested prior to their release as per the established protocol, this set of tests produced a reactive test with the other 9 being negative for SARS-CoV2.

From arrival up to today, the due protocols to minimize contact and exposure have been followed so this is being considered an isolated case which has been contained. The person remains asymptomatic and in isolation.

As we move along, we continue with our enhanced surveillance and the review of protocols in response to our national situation.

Ministry of Health Confirms 20th Case of COVID-19

As a result of a revised protocol that came into effect this week, persons entering Belize either legally or illegally are being swabbed and tested for COVID-19. That process identified a positive case for COVID-19 in a 22-year-old female who was caught entering Belize illegally on Sunday, June 7th.

The female was traveling with a one-year-old child and a 63-year-old female, who were all placed in the mandatory quarantine facility in Punta Gorda. The patient is asymptomatic.

The contact tracing process for this positive case is currently underway and once further relevant information is available, it will be shared through the routine information channels.

The Ministry of Health urges the public to adhere to its protocols and to continue to exercise the prevention measures at all times.

COVID-19 update

A record number of SARS-CoV2 tests were completed earlier today - a total of 120!

They were all negative and this batch included some repatriated Belizeans.

The Ministry of Health continues to work closely with the relevant agencies as the repatriation process of Belizeans continues.
Today a further 22 persona came into the country, 7 through the Northern border station and 15 arrived at the PGIA.

Our work continues.

We went ahead and ran samples for those who arrive on the flight on Friday and we have detected another case of COVID-19 - Case 21.

The person is a male, asymptomatic who was in the Houston area and went into the mandatory quarantine upon arrival on Friday.

The person is asymptomatic and will continue to remain in strict quarantine for the next 14 days when a new sample will be processed.

The identification of the new case follows the established protocol of testing those upon arrival.

Key elements in any ongoing Belizean success story will hinge around: Quick detection + rapid isolation so as to contain further spread of cases.

We will therefore continue to work diligently with the relevant departments in the ongoing repatriation process that has clearly articulated guidelines of how the process and the flow of arrivals would be.

We are confident that if this is followed the way the plan is structured, all Belizeans would be able to return without this contributing to any potential community spread.

We are concerned however, with the potential cases that are done through the illegal border entry points as this would surely escape any quick containment.

As we move along this process, we will be keeping all updated in real time as to how this is going and any changes that may need to be made in real time.
