My grandfather was a pirate of sorts in the Caribbean. He had a sailing ship and used to smuggle rum from St. Maarten to Saba, Anguilla, Martinique and St. Barths. It was hidden under the floor boards, under the legal cargo!!! Also used to transport prisoners when it was profitable. Many of whom leaped overboard to escape only to meet their deaths. (Sharks and coral) My great great grandfather was a physician from France and was paid to care for the slaves upon arrival in the islands. Get them healthy and ready for sale. I'm sure that was a horrific job....... Some were so grateful for their lives, they left him their last possessions in thanks, as they would have been stolen from them anyway. My mother has a lovely bracelet as a result. Yes, Caribbean history is fascinating.
