A group of four of us just returned from Ambergris Caye last Saturday. Two of the four of us in our group have developed a very itchy rash that is spreading over the torso. The rash appeared within 3-4 days after returning to the US.

I didn't get the rash but two of my friends did. One of the friends affected is so uncomfortable that she cannot go to work. She has gone to her Doctor.

Any suggestions on what could have caused this?
We were there just last week.

Chicken Pox?

I asked about chicken pox, but one of the affected friends said she definitely had that as a child. From what I understand, you shouldn't expect to have a second episode.

Anythings possible. Lots of Belizeans on Ambergris have had chicken pox lately.

Could it be Pica Pica?

I was wondering the same thing Gela but wouldn't it have shown up sooner?

I've never heard of Pica-Pica taking so long to manifest itself. Seeing the doctor sounds wise.

I have known people to get chicken pox twice. It's not really a rash, but are spots that itch and then form a 'scab'.
What did her doctor say?

Chicken Pox are extremely contagious and have an incubation period before they show on the surface then are still contagious till the 'scabs' are all dry
You won't know you have them until you see the spots.
By the way, its Varicella Zoster, a form of Herpes.
Shingles, which my Mother has had for the last 4 years, along with her other illnesses, is extremely painful and is also a form of Herpes.
