Another American wanting to change laws in a country that has nothing to do with their life-perhaps Alfredo you should realise that people have to be over the age of 18 to sell alcohol-
Do you really want Belize to be a GWB satellite like Haiti (another success story)

Yeah, you will probably encounter "the ugly American" when I discover I'm out of Milports and marshmellow "peeps" at 9:15!

O.K. Thurston keeps telling that. Being the plebian that I am, my tastes tend toward Milports and "peeps", so if you stop by the house I'll give you my "smoked" salmon in exchange for those Marshmellow delights.

As an American possessing unqualified and inalienable rights, I hereby demand that ALL Belizian retail, wholesale and parasail operators remain open for business eight days per week until, at the minimum, 9:01 p.m., local time.

Absent that guarantee, I will boycott Jet's Bar and Lighthouse Lager except for those times when I am actually, physically, present within Belizian boundries or contested Guatamalan borders.

So there.

That old law is stupid. Why would a country of intelligent people need legislation that prevents grocery items being sold by willing employees/shop owners to willing buyers? It is okay to sell alcohol all night long, but not rice and beans? Many Belizeans enjoy earning money after 9:00 p.m. just ask them. Even though the rate of pay is seen as unreasonable by Pedro1. At least they should have the opportunity to work after 9:00 p.m. if they choose to.

Armchair quarterbacks are hardly ever wrong.

I hear people complain about crime and "commercialism" and now (on the flip side)about a 9PM shop law.

???

The law is from pre-independence when Belize City was the only commercial center with a few major stores. It was designed to get people off the streets for crime prevention.

In attempts to curb crime this law is being re-enforced, mainly for Belize City. So until ammendments can be made, the entire country will be required to follow the law.

Fortunately Belize is independent from the UK and the USA and will make their share of mistakes and successes. Unfortunately we all will have an endless supply of worthless critics who fail to contribute to the cause of sustainable developement.
