San Pedro Belize Lions Club

History
Organizations come and go. We have seen youth groups, women's groups, political groups, service groups, sports groups, dance groups, musical groups, etc., come and go. But not the San Pedro Lions Club. Their service to San Pedro has been one of sincere commitment, courage, patience and love.

The San Pedro Lions Club was organized by the Belize City Lions Club. The actual District Governor, Lion Governor Leonides Cuellar, was instrumental in founding the club. It was chartered on October 25, 1975, with its first president Mr. Pedro Salazar Sr., and its first secretary Mr. Johnny Lizama Sr. The club was chartered with 36 members and its first queen was Celi Jean Greif Varela.

The first big project undertaken by Lions was to build and staff a clinic at a time when there were no permanent resident medical doctors on the island. This building was not only financed, but the actual manual construction was done by the Lions. Other big projects have been the construction of a nurse's home, the construction of a doctor's residence, the construction of a Lion's Den, the Mosquito Coast Park and countless other projects and fund raisings. Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been given to earthquake victims, fire victims, sickness, funerals, flood and hurricane victims, and surgeries at home and abroad. Today the Lions Club has the ability to raise an average of seven hundred dollars a week and as monies come in, so is it dispensed to requests for assistance. The number on "help case" is assistance for medical expenses.

The History of the San Pedro Lions Club International

Lionism began on the island of Ambergris Caye, Belize, when three local men, namely Wilfredo Alamilla, Alan Forman, and Pedro Salazar Sr. (who were members of the Belize City Lions Club), decided to start their own club in their village home of San Pedro. On October 25, 1975, the San Pedro Lions Club was officially chartered, boasting an enrollment of 36 members. 45 years later, this historical event is celebrated by the San Pedro Lions Club as they reflect on the history of their hardworking club that is dedicated to SERVE their beloved community.

Today, as the Lions work to construct a town hospital, one that might come near the million dollar total, it celebrates its 24 years of existence. Click here for info on the hospital!
