Belize Airlines oppose GOB/Mexican airlines agreement

Press Release - Belize Airline Operators Association - November 11, 1997. The Government of Belize (GOB) is this week signing an agreement allowing Mexican airlines to take passengers from Belize to Flores, Guatemala (fifth freedom rights). This forces local airlines to compete with huge Mexican airlines that operate in a practically tax free environment. The effect will be that the Belize airlines will eventually be driven out of the market and forced to earn all their revenues internally, which will drive up domestic air fares.

Fifth freedom rights allow a second country's airlines to take passengers to a third country and are rarely granted; it wold be similar to allowing Mexican boats to fish our waters and sell us back our fish. The Belize Airline Operators Association is in strong opposition to this agreement.
