Ambergris Cayes guiding lights

Water Taxi owners, boat operators and visitors that travel to or around San Pedro Town at night will be pleased to know that the San Pedro Town Board with the assistance of local citizens have embarked on a project to light up the water surrounding the front of the island.

Dr. Wil Lala was kind enough to purchase six solar powered lights for the town board on his trip to the states. The Town Board reimbursed Dr. Lala $1,500.00 for the lights. Mr. Billy Leslie is donating his time and equipment for the installation of the lights. In phase one of the project six lights will be put in place. Two smaller, amber coloured lights positioned at the mouth of the river will be mounted on PVC pipes and sunk into the bedrock; the remaining four larger, white lights will also be anchored to cement filled tractor tires. These will be positioned at the following locations: one at Pescador, two at either end of Mata Rocks (not the resort), and one at Mexico Rocks.

Other lights have been ordered and will soon be positioned south of the river or phase two of the project. A light will also be placed at the channel so that sail boats approaching the island at night will have a safe guide.

The Town Board would like to remind sea vessel operators to observe the no-wake zone laws and to travel cautiously. No-wake signs are posted at intervals. Most importantly, boat operators should NOT use the lights as mooring buoys.
