Mother's Day Program

"Mother of the Year" Mrs. Nena Squires

Mother's Day '98 was the most successful Mother's Day program La Isla Bonita has ever hosted, with a record attendance of about 600 mothers. The program started at 5:30 p.m. with a religious ceremony at the San Pedro Catholic Church, celebrated by Father Murray. Accompanying the church choir was Mrs. Marthita Leslie, Mrs. Marcie Nuñez, Mrs. Leny Alamilla, Mrs. Leonie Trejo, Mr. Severo Guerrero, Mr. Lucio Guerrero, Mr. Ramon Guerrero, Mrs. Martha Guerrero, and Mrs. Petit Nuñez. A special homage was sung by the Aguilas del Caribe, mariachis from Cozumel, Mexico, who sang the "Ave Maria" in Latin. Of course, the mariachis, at the end of the ceremony, serenaded the mothers during the rose ceremony. Following the program, the mothers were escorted to Central Park by the students of St. Matthew's University School of Medicine.

Hosting the evening program was Mr. Angel Nuñez and Ms. Vilma Villanueva of Estereo Amor. A special turkey dinner was served by the management of Rasta Pasta. Throughout the evening, the mothers were entertained by Barbara Alonzo's School of Dance, Lichi's Box, a special presentation by Ms. Chiquitita, and the Marachi's Aguilas del Caribe. In addition, there were many gifts, over 300, that were given out to the mothers, ranging from a brand new stove, won by Angie Alamilla, to a watch won by Rosella Guerrero.

However, the highlight of the evening was when the hosts, Mr. Nuñez and Ms. Villanueva, invited the students of St. Matthew's to give away 25 gift certificates to the mothers of their choice. Many cheers and many hands went up trying to get the students' attention. The Committee would like to thank publicly the students for their kind cooperation and assistance in making this year's program a true success.

At around 10:30 p.m. there was a silence among the mothers as they waited patiently for the announcement of "Mother of the Year", who was rightly won by Mrs. Nena Squires, an exemplary mother of six; Dulce, Sonny, Mari, Deni, Mini, and Olita. "Miss Nena" has struggled throughout her life to educate her children, and has participated and contributed in numerous community events. Felicidades, Mrs. Nena Squires! The evening came to an end with a Vote of Thanks by Patty Arceo and a serenade of the mariachis. The Mother's Day Committee would like to thank the business community of San Pedro and especially Susan and Lily for all the prizes and certificates that were given at the Mother's Day Program. They also thank everyone once more and promise that next year they will make the program a bigger success and will be bringing an international guest artist to hold a Mother's Day concert.

The program was hosted by the San Pedro Town Board, Mayor AlbertoNuñez, Deputy Mayor Eiden Salazar, and Councilors through the Mother's Day Committee. It was chaired by the Mother's Day '98 Committee: Patty Arceo, Ira Acosta, Ilsa Salazar, Regina Salazar, Susan Arceo, Lily Nuñez, Chabby Salazar, Lina Guemez, Barbara Alonzo, Mari Cruz Nuñez, and Adelita Bouloy.
