Costa Maya Festival draws near







With only 9 weeks before the San Pedro International Costa Maya Festival, committee members are confirming and finalizing festival plans. On May 7th, the festival committee held a meeting at the Paradise Hotel patio to discuss preparations.

It was announced that the construction of the new fence for the festival grounds (the old football field) should be complete before June 29th, which is San Pedro Day. 16 rooms have been donated for the week of the festival. The Hotel Sponsors for this year's festival as of the last meeting are: Ramon's Village, Paradise Hotel, Belize Yacht Club, San Pedro Holiday Hotel, SunBreeze Hotel, Royal Palm Villas, Spindrift Hotel and Banyan Bay Villas.

Reina de la Costa Maya organizer, Marisa Salazar, announced that El Salvador has confirmed that they will be participating and that information and photos of the country's representative will be available to the public after the Miss Universe Pageant on May 12th. Information and pictures of the other contestants will follow.

El Ballet Nacional de Instituto Turismo will be performing on Guatemala night; the band has not yet been confirmed. On the second night of the festival, El Salvador Night, Ballet Nacional will be performing along with the band, Do Mayor. On Mexico, Night Ballet de Folklorico de Quintana Roo, Mexico, will be performing; the band has not been confirmed as yet. No entertainment has been confirmed for Friday, Honduras Night, nor for Saturday, Belize International Night. The guest international artist for Belize International Night will be confirmed before May 19th. On Sunday, the grand finale, the Unidade ("Unity") band, better known as the old high school band, will be performing.

Sponsors for the 1998 Costa Maya Festival as of May 7th include: Crystal Shipping, Pete's Enterprises, San Pedro Town Board, Ramon's Village and Travel and Tour Belize. The next Costa Maya Festival meeting will be held 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19th, on the patio at Paradise Hotel.
