Mother's Day Celebration

Mother of the Year Mrs. Lina Guemez (r) with daughter Yadira

Las Verdaderas Madres son todo Amor was the message of this year's Mother's Day Program. Once again the program began with a religious ceremony in honor of all the mothers at the San Pedro R. C. Church. After the ceremony, a gala program was held at Central Park. Once again the Mother's Day Committee spearheaded by the San Pedro Town Board spared no details in making the program a first class event. Students of St. Matthews University escorted mothers to their tables and presented them with a rose pendant. Hosting the program were Angel Nuñez assisted by Hon. Patty Arceo.

The program commenced with a welcome address to the mothers by Mayor Alberto Nuñez and a message by Town Board Councilor, Pedro Ayuso. The San Pedro High School Choir opened the show giving three melodious renditions to the special guests of the evening. The San Pedro Dance Company performed numerous dances. The juniors, like the rest of the groups stole the hearts of the gathering. To complement their well rehearsed dances were detailed costumes which included elaborate headpieces. After each presentation, the members of the San Pedro Dance Company presented their mothers with a rose. Barbara's Dance Group also performed a potpourri of dances from the various cultures of the world, bringing together a collage of ethnic dances. This as well, was a crowd favorite.

During the evening, the attendees were treated to a special turkey dinner accompanied by rich Sangria. Once again, the students of St. Matthews University took the pleasure of serving the mothers present. A special moment was taken to acknowledge the past Mothers of the Year from 1985 to 1989. Various prizes were given away during the evening and many lucky mothers went home with fabulous gifts. Mrs. Rosa Vasquez was awarded with a fan for being the oldest mother present, Mrs. Martha Badillo received a bouquet for being honored as the mother with most children and Martita Leslie for being both mom and dad won a set of cookware.

Mexican comedians and impersonators entertained during the latter part of the program filling the venue with great smiles and laughter from the mothers. Highlighting the evening were performances by imitators of renown Mexican singers "Juan Gabriel and Rafael". The best part of the event was left for last, when outgoing Mother of the Year, Mrs. Nena Squire graced the public with her presence on stage ready to sash the new Mother of the Year. Not surprising, the title was awarded to Mrs. Lina Guemez. Mrs. Guemez is the mother of Omar Alamilla and Yadira Paz and grandmother to five grandchildren. Mrs. Guemez has been an exemplary mom who enjoys sewing for dance groups and for her grandchildren's school functions. She also enjoys working with arts and crafts making sure all details are perfect. She is a friendly and respected personality on the island. She is the perfect example of a mother and well deserving of the title, Mother of the Year. Mrs. Guemez was awarded with a plaque, sash, a stove and one butane tank, a gold ring and eight hours golf cart rental. Congratulations Miss Lina.

The Mother's Day Committee would like to thank all those who donated their time and/or prizes for this special event helping to make it a successful one.
