I used to send people to a place called Zamas. Cabanas on the beach just S of Tulum. Not sure if it is still there but I will see what I can find out. Cheap, quaint, Mexican...

kc, it was bought out by palace resorts, and is on like 40 acres. we went cuz the "deal" was too dirt cheap to pass up, and price includes trips to coba & tulum, plus other stuff. the saving grace of the place (now all inclusive with blah food cept large yummy breakfast buffet) is that they made it 2-story thatch cabanas (2 rooms each, up & down), with 144 very nice jacuzzi rooms and really spread them out so it is private and doesnt FEEL like a huge resort. guess nothinig stays the same.

Azulik rocks and Copal is very hippy, very cool.

My favorite place on the Yucatan Caribbean coast.

Copal has a native smoke lodge and set on these way cool cliffs over looking white surf and emeral waters.

Paraiso has the best beach in Tulum, fun bar.

Mezzanine is where we stayed due to the rest/bar, kinda like Capricorn with a bit of Azul (here). Great experience, British owned.

Tulum is one awesome place, enjoy.

I cannot find anything on that Zamas place. Must have changed names or not be in business any longer. Sorry!

Barb - Zamas was a short walk down the beach from Maya Tulum....great restaurant. Ate there every day. Sad to hear it's no longer there.

Collyk - I remember seeing a few different places (cabanas/casitas on the beach) just south of Tulum away from the hustle & bustle.

It appears Zamas is still there as we saw it during our research.

great. I guess it's just not represented by the company I used to book it through. Looks like the rates have increased too. Still looks pretty cool.

Where and when did all this occur? The first time we were at the ruins, the most active spot for miles around was the ruins parking lot. The last time we were there, there was a good size mini-mall. Progress even happens to ruins.

Been there, done that, the washing machine ate the T-shirt
