Respect for the Dead in the Old Days

In the old days notices were posted up in the many prominent places announcing funerals. There are solemn events and great reverence is shown the dead. The deceased are generally buried within twenty-four hours after death. After viewing the body at the home, a long procession (depending popularity of the person) follows the cart to the Church. The mourners are dressed in their finest black or white clothing. As they pass the business section, the store keepers close their windows and doors in respect and reopen them as a soon as the procession has passed. Speaking to Elders in the Downtown area in Belize City, this tradition may have been conducted up to the 50’s -60’s.
