The pristine New Town Barracks in Belize along the shore, 1908

Black and white photo circa 1920s and the color circa 1908.

The Barracks has long been one of our favourite open spaces. It has been a place of history, controversy and entertainment.

I still remember very clearly a kite contest they had out there one year. Somebody had made the largest kite I ever saw even up to today. It must have been about 15 to 20 feet tall easy. It took a few men to raise it. When they got it up they had to tie it to a coconut tree. Because in those days there were so many kites up in the air, when this gargantuan kit went from one side to the next it took many of the other kits with it. Kits were hanging off it all over the place.
