The Belize Zoo & Tropical Education Center. The Belize Zoo is settled upon 29 acres of tropical savanna and exhibits over 125 animals all native to Belize. Zoo SceneThe zoo keeps animals which were either orphaned, born at the zoo, rehabilitated animals, or sent to The Belize Zoo as gifts from other zoological institutions. The Belize Zoo believes that by bringing the people of Belize closer to the animals which are their natural heritage, they will feel proud of these special resources, and want to protect them for future generations.

Tapir meets man with tapir mask. Are we related?

The Central American tapir is an Endangered species. Very few of these important large herbivores remain within their geographic range; Belize is one of their last strongholds in this region. Tapirs are critical in keeping tropical forests in a healthy state. Increased forest habitat destruction and vehicle collisions threaten their remaining populations. It is the hope of The Belize Zoo that, by highlighting the members of “Tapir Town”, a growing appreciation and awareness will serve to see that our special National Animal will always be present in Belize, and proudly expressed in healthy populations.
