Three children at the telephone in Central Park, May 1993
Laura Gutierrez:
The older girl is Olga Gonzalez, the boy is Freddy Gonzalez, their parents are Guatemalans. If I'm not mistaken, they returned to Guatemala.
In 1978 there was only one phone. I remember when the only phone was in what looked like a former outhouse in Ms Steins yard. It took a lot of times to get international. There were only 25 lines out of Belize. Pier Lounge got the 2nd phone. Or later sitting at Fidos and waiting for 4 hours for the operator to call you back and all you called think all you do is drink all day. Henry and Mary Beissner had one very early on. I remember when the only phone on Caye Caulker was a radio phone at Miss Claudia and Mr. Eduardo Reyes’ house.
Before phones there were only a couple of shortwaves on the island. Only two Land Rovers. No Golf Carts.
Eli Pearly:
Oh how many times we used that phone.
Or tried to...
Never worked most of the time!!
