Groove-billed Ani
Ani's are in the Cuckoo family, but unique among cuckoo's for their communal nesting, which has earned them the local name of "Socialist Bird."
They live and forage in social groups from 3 to more than 10 individuals. Anis are omnivores and feed on most things available like berries, insects, frogs and lizards. Specially fond of grasshopper in open farm lands, scrubby forest and savannas.
The group is typically led by a dominant female.
Several females nest together in one common nest and supposedly the male of the dominant female gets the task, of fulfilling her task of guarding the eggs. Taken in our garden on Monkey River road.
