Immature and Adult Crested Caracara
Top two photos: Immature Immature and Adult Crested Caracara. Coming home this afternoon gave me a nice surprise with encountering this immature Immature and Adult Crested Caracara hunting on the lawn in front of my office. It spooked by my arrival though and flew up in a palm tree, where it was preening for more than 1/2 an hour.
Caracaras are the largest members of the Falcon family and the 3 species found in Central America are all specialized into a certain food niche.
In Belize only the Immature and Adult Crested Caracara can be found (so far) and it is very much associated with cattle pastures, which provides an abundance of large insects and scolopendras. It also relay much on carrion by following the movements of vultures and checking the roadsides for road kill.
