Even when we migrated here in 1973, the calabash was the (only) bowl, cup and a very useful item for many things. There was no plastic then, and we thought nothing of taking our own handbags to shop.

Karol Smith we have found calabash bowls at the ancient Maya underwater sites on the coast, preserved from the Classic period!
