John is not using an iphone, because why would Vice use John's phone? It was Vice's reporter or photographer's iPhone, and he either forgot or sent the pic back to Vice headquarters expecting them to strip the metadata as usual, but someone screwed up. So then John came up with a lame and totally unconvincing cover story that he changed the metadata. Which would be tricky to do on the other guy's phone without him noticing. Not that it is a huge deal that he is in Guatamala, as he is not accused of anything (yet) and has nothing to fear from arrest there really. It's just all part of the misdirection campaign to keep everyone guessing as to his location. Problem is, it's gradually becoming apparent that the ongoing misdirection (we used to call it "lying") is turning out to be bigger than the truth part, so gradually we realize everything he says is in doubt. He lies repeatedly and then says sorry and justifies it. This is why he keeps burning up the reporters, friends, lovers, expats, workers etc--they trust him at first then get disillusioned as they realize what a psychopath ** he really is. So then he turns to a stranger, who gets intrigued by his celebrity initially and his charm, and starts all over, until they catch on and ditch him too. Sam of course, is his paid escort, probably highly paid at that, so she hangs in.
The Belize police will tire of his antics and charge him with obstruction of justice for refusing to cooperate in their investigation of the neighbor's murder (or drugs and weapons) or just cut to the chase and go straight to murder. They likely would have done so already if not for all the attention he has attracted. If all of us had the option of refusing to be questioned by police by just going on the run and opening channels to declare our innocence, there would be (even) a lot more guilty people on the streets. The accusation of corruption is a red herring of course. It turns out all police forces anywhere in the world are corrupt and lawless and inept and untrustworthy to some extent, so on that basis, no one should ever have to answer to them, right? They are not going to kill him they are going to charge him with obstruction, drugs, weapons, murder, some of, or all of the above. He is so used to playing by his own rules, and he is attempting a desperate OJ type dash (with no one actually in hot pursuit other than the reporters) while he tries to figure out a way out of this. BTW, he can't go to the US embassy, they are just going to hand him over to the DEA or FBI, due to the fact the murdered neighbor is a US citizen.
**Psychopaths are controlling, manipulative, often charming. They really REALLY like to get their own way. They lie convincingly and unabashedly to "misdirect". When caught in a lie they have elaborate almost reasonable explanations or excuses, but they never drop the lie. "They're out to get me" is a catchall as it can more or less cover any "what the hell?" situation. They often fool people for a while but sooner or later people catch on. Sound familiar?
Looking forward to the Vice report to see how much of this hit the mark. Naturally we expect Vice to give us the unvarnished truth.
Four hours after I posted my deductions here about the iphone metadata misdirection, he fessed up on his blog. Now he is telling us "It was not easy to exit Belize and required many supporters in many countries." O sure. C'mon John, pull the other one--you simply came in on your boat, which is where you've been all along, cruising up and down the coast. Easiest thing to do, far safer than getting around on land where there could be a road block anywhere.
