We are heading to the island in Dec/Jan and have a couple of questions. We had heard that in some spots the water is very shallow for a long way out, are there some parts of the island that are better for swimming (north end, south end)? Also, are there any condos with kitchens that are particularily recommended - we want to stick to $200 a night or less if possible. Thanks for any info.

Loved the set up at Banana Beach - unit has bedroom/bath and a seperate living room with full kitchen. The kitchen was pretty well supplied with dishes, glasses, coffemaker, etc and had a microwave, full size fridge, stovetop & I'm pretty sure an oven, but not positive 'cause I don't remember using it. The price was great, and included a full breakfast everyday. Service was close to perfect and I thought they had one of the better beaches on the island, in terms of keeping the sea grass cleaned up although it is a small beach with a sea wall. We checked out several other places for future stays - Banyon Bay is very nice and sounds like it will meat your needs - but for the time we're in the room and what we were looking for we're headed back to Banana Beach - -figure the money saved will buy a few more rum punches! Have a great time wherever you choose!

Hi Guys - thanks for the quick feedback. I checked out Banana Beach on the map and it looks pretty far south - not knowing the island I'm just wondering if this is a misconception or if this is a bit isolated for activities such as fishing / renting hobie cats / town activities? Thanks.

Banana Beach has plenty of places for beach activities but it is a long walk to town. You can always rent a cab or golfcart.

I need another vacation.

It depends on what you consider long. 20 minutes walk to town maybe. That's all. I would consider that a short walk myself. We walked from Mata Rocks to town twice a day every day during our stay and did not find it tiring or difficult, just very pleasant and relatively quick. We walk 15 minutes every day just to catch our train into town and then 15 to 20 minutes at the other end. Seems fairly normal as far as we are concerned. Obviously if you have a disability, then it would be different, but any healthy person who finds a 20 minute walk a long one, needs to get out more often.

Agree the walk's not long - we only did it early morning or later in the evening. Too hot during the middle of the day, that's what golf carts are for! You can rent them through Monkey Business right there at Banana Beach, by the hour or day.

Thanks for the correct info on the oven klc, I just couldn't remember wink You're right, the food on the island is great - just that we were there long enough that I didn't want restaurant food every day so I was happy to be able to cook dinner a couple of nights!
