Japan Reaches out to Hurricane Victims in Belize

18 October, 2000 - Ladyville Village, Belize District
The Government of Japan today joined the list of donor countries to
reach out to victims of Hurricane Keith in Belize.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) today handed over a
consignment of disaster relief supplies to the National Emergency
Management Organization (NEMO) during a brief mid-morning ceremony in
Ladyville village.

The Japanese contribution to Belize's Hurricane relief effort is valued
at US$53,481.50 and includes generators, blankets and plastic roofing
material.

In handing over the donation, Representative of the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs in the Embassy of Japan in Mexico Mr. Masashi Mizukami expressed
sympathies to those affected by Hurricane Keith and said his government
is grateful it could contribute to the recovery effort in Belize.

Mr. Mizukami pledged Japan's continued assistance to Belize beyond times
of national emergencies.

The Japanese donation was accepted by National Disaster Coordinator
Anthony Sylvestre who thanked the people and Government of Japan for
their assistance to Belize in this difficult period.

Mr. Sylvestre told the Government Press Office that the 20 generators
are destined for San Pedro Ambergris and Caye Caulker to help alleviate
the shortage of electricity supply.

The other supplies Sylvestre said are for use in the rural areas of the
Belize and Orange Walk districts.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency is a special-status public
corporation established in 1974 and among its major activities is to
offer overseas development assistance.
