re swimable waters...you walk through sea grass to get to deep enough water by the water docks; then you have to stay clear of oil/gas from the boats and urinating sea captains; the water at the split doesn't have the sea grass, but it does have a really ugly cement wall that takes away from the caye's beauty.
The best water play was when we went snorkeling out near the reef and not around the "beaches".

Seaview Hotel on the southern end of the island has two cabanas for rent. US $300/week. Basic but very clean & quiet.

So, Globetrekker, there is no beach on which you can go into the water during the day without lots of boats and potential dirty water? If there are some quite places to go and get wet, without going to the reef to snorkel, where on the island are they? Also, is staying in the cabana's directly next to the boat taxi dock going to be a loud and obnoxious place to stay?

PS. Is there a beach at the split, other than a concrete wall? Can you wade/swim across?

The "dirty water" mentioned above is a relative thing. The water is crystal clear blue and cleaner than what is in your tap at home, though it is salty.
Most local folks swim off the piers. There are natural beaches in the south of the island you can reach with a bike or on foot. No boats, almost deserted. You may go nude there -we do-but get advice from locals you see in the area so as not offend.
You can swim across the Split but sometimes the current in there rocks big time. No worries, it takes you into the shallow. Sometimes we get out and walk back to ride several tiomes.

Deserted is the key idea to the place. The owner doesn't mind. Try me when you are here and I might show you.
