does anyone have the inside story on this terrible incident? i will be spending 32 days in san pedro & wanted to take some side trips to other cayes,alone, is this advisable or not? dates are 6/15 to 7/17, 00.

This incident that you refer to happened in Guatemalan waters to the far south of Belize.
It has nothing to do with Ambergris Caye or San Pedro. Come on down and enjoy your holiday.

Unfortunately, stories in the U.S. media (including the widely distributed AP article which appeared in most papers on Sunday) were datelined Punta Gorda, Belize. The water taxi was coming from Puerto Barrios, Guatemala, and the incident apparently occurred in Guatemalan waters. To the casual reader, who probably has only a minimal grasp of Central America geography, the articles appear to suggest that the crime was in Belize, since it was a Belizean-owned water taxi and several Belizeans were killed. Also, the owner of the leading hotel in PG, American-born but now a Belize citizen, was shot in the hijacking, but happily is now recovering in the hospital in Belize City.
