I think when desribing the beaches of San Pedro... you really just can't. I can see, Scott, how you would have had that preception of the beaches upon arriving. Everyone has their own opinion of what a really great beach should be and it's hard to describe to someone a "good" beach. A lot of people I know would not consider the beaches in SP ideal for laying out however, just the breeze and beautiful water would compensate for the lack of waves and typical beach we might be used to.

I find it very relaxing to lay out at Ruby's (or are they Holiday's??) on the lawn chairs. They have yet to give me the boot! laugh

I walk the beach daily with my dogs. I love the beaches here. I grew up on an island and have a deep affection for the seaside. I've been to beaches in several countries and while San Pedro beaches are not necessarily like other beaches I have been to, I can't really compare any of them. How do you compare the California coast to the magical beaches of Ireland, or the coast of Mexico to the wild expanses of beach in Scotland?

The things I love about the beaches here are:

The colours of the water change every day.

The amazing wildlife, which only exists because of the seagrass. A couple of days ago, I saw a baby turtle swimming just off of one of the beaches. I've seen dolphins too many times to count - right up close to the shore. I've seen rays, eels and a huge array of other interesting sea creatures such as sea hares during my daiy walks.

You can walk endlessly along the beach until you hit mangrove.

You can see the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere.

The water is warm and shallow.

You meet people from all over the world, all over Central America and all over Belize while walking.

All sorts of interesting things wash up in the seagrass.

You can watch those that make their living from the sea going up and down in their boats, catching sardines and entertaining tourists.

One day the beach will be thick with seagrass and by the next, the sea will have taken it all back again.

The beach landscape changes with the tides and the weather.

There is tons of room for everyone to have plenty of space to themselves. You can often find a whole stretch of beach with no one else on it.

I could go on, but I think this suffices.

Ambergris Caye beaches are, for the most part, not hugely wide and are not always pristine. There are some wide beaches that are pristine and Victoria House beach is one of those that come to mind.

I love our beaches.

Ramon's beach is just N of BYC, Exotic Caye beach is just S of BYC. Either is nice for lounging & both have good bars!

Thanks Barbara - I figured anywhere near the BYC would have too many boats to actually do any swimming/snorkling- is this not the case? or are these two locations far enough away that you are not worried about a boat driving over your head while you explore below?

Since we are just north of BYC, I can tell you that many many many tourists and locals alike swim and snorkel off of the three nearest piers without any incidents of folks being hit by boats. Because the water is shallow on the west side of the reef, the boats generally have to follow a channel further out when they are traveling. They do pull up to the piers to load and unload passengers, but they do that everywhere.

That was a wonderful view of the beach seen. My wife and I will be there Sat. Can you tell me time of day for dolphine sightings. This would thrill her to no end.
Thx
