Does anyone know what this really means? Are they going to build a road north, from San Pedro, to a destination to embark by boat to Mexico?

Belmopan, 17 August 2009. The Embassy of Mexico informs that on 15 August, the Mayor of the of Othon P. Blanco (Chetumal), Mr. Andres Ruiz-Morcillo, and Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviación and Culture, Hon. Manuel Heredia, signed a Letter of Intent in order to promote the construction of a road between San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, and Xcalak (within the Municipality of Othon P. Blanco), Mexico. The objective of the Letter of Intent is to boost the tourism industry in the Chetumal Bay and the north of Belize, including Ambergris Caye. In particular, Mexico and Belize will seek to connect San Pedro with Xcalak (Mexico) and Mahahual with a road, from where an already existing access will make possible the connection with Chetumal or Tulum and Cancun. San pedro daily report.

This must mean that larger vehicles will be allowed over the bridge. Good news for cheap gasoline but bad news for the North Island.

What an absurdity! With "friends" like Heredia, tourism is doomed. The water taxi connection sounds great. The road is an abomination.

For one thing, a road through the middle of Bacalar Chico - the island's most unspoiled area with the most potential for INTELLIGENT tourism - is the end of Bacalar Chico. What is this guy thinking? Bacalar Chico is part of Belize's World Heritage Site, already on probation because of similar moves in the past.

Heredia should be impeached!

I guess you guys have never heard about the "Corona Highway".

Also Coming soon: Chapter 11 Amusement park, Ritz Carlton Hotel, Nascar Race Track, NFL Stadium (80,000 capacity) And Oh yea, a Starbucks on every corner.

If that road appears from the Mexico I will get on it and find another place to go.!!

I haven't lived here long but all I can say is "curioser and curioser". Wonder if somebody owns a big chunk of land up that way on both sides of the border?

Can we arrange the first annual Golf Cart race from BC's to Senor Frogs in Cancun?

OK really, its fun to jab about it but the question still remains, are they going to build a road? Or are they going to ferry? The cost of building a real road would kill them financially. They have a hard time with bridges washed out by the rivers and just maintaining the other highways on the mainland. Who would pay for this? The Mexicans?

Kind of like the paving of the road from the bridge to town that was to start in March?

The paste below is more than a pipe dream Elbert, its a signed letter of intent. This would indicate a move forward and more than just idle chat.
