Will be going to the Phoenix in San Pedro and spending our time there..in town, Mayan ruins, snorkeling.
I have been to Europe-but not any place with warnings for Dengue or Malaria.
Is it recommended to get yellow fever vaccine? pre med for malaria and be paranoid about mosquitos??- we are just staying in San Pedro and going to a Mayan ruin site recommended by the Phoenix.
I know it sounds ridiculous-but once an RN, always an RN.
I am going with my family-my children are 16 and 13.
any advice?
is the crime bad???/
Thank you!!

Your too funny Jesse but remember, in Belize all things prohibited tend to be ignored.

I'm kidding..sorta. They do control pests and you do not need to worry about mosquitoes there

No more than anywhere else. My daughter just spent 3 mos in Hawaii on the big island and got eaten alive there. She survived.

I'm from the Big Island and can understand..if she stayed out away from town in a bushy area with no wind then she would find bugs

I think I am following you..haha-I take it the Phoenix does not cater to the likes of a mosquito...in other words, they are unwanted and without cash correct??? haha
I appreciate the honesty.
if you go to the mayan ruins-any particular one that is better than others??? are you near jungles??
sounds silly-but I have over read everything....
thank you

If you are coming in dry season there are very few, if any, mosquitoes on the island. The jungle seems to have very few mosquitoes at any time.
Malaria is rare, and the strain found in this region is both mild and easily treated.
Dengue is a mosquito-borne disease - we don't see much of it at all and again, it's a rainy season thing.
Ambergris Caye is a flat, sandy island. It has some areas of thick bush but we don't refer to that as jungle. The jungle is on the mainland, a significant distance from the sea.
If you want to see a lovely ruin and a beautiful jungle-river habitat, the Al-Tun-Ha day trip is a good one. I love Lamanai as well, but it is a longer day and your kids may get restless. Al Tun Ha is impressive and if your tour combines it with a stop at Maruba for lunch the kids can jump in the pool or ride horses there.
Have never heard of yellow fever in this area.
Always a good idea to stay current with tetanus - for daily life anywhere.
I've traveled to places where one is advised to have the full battery of shots and pills and stuff - I even got rabies vaccine once - but here I don't even bother with a flu shot. I think you will find yourself pleased with the healthy environment.
The Phoenix is superb - have a wonderful stay.
