Earlier last month, the Statistical Institute of Belize released the Labour Force Survey results for April 2012. In the final report, a lot of interesting findings were noted, especially the numbers found in the unemployment sector. So we have decided to create an infographic showing a little bit of what the unemployment sector looks like in Belize.

Before going into some alarming figures, the infographic shows some information on the current population of Belize for 2012. The total current population for Belize is (338,936). This number indicates a 8% increase in population compared to the population in Belize for the year 2010. The final results show that that there is an equal ratio of one male (169,469) to one female (169,467) in the country of Belize.

The labour force is made up of 148,093 people, of which 21,371 are unemployed and 126,722 are employed. This shows that there is a 14.4% unemployment rate for the country of Belize in 2012.

9.2% (8,083) of men were found unemployed, while 22.3% (13,287) of women were found unemployed -- this shows that women are the most affected by unemployment in Belize.

From the survey, you can also notice that the Mayans have a 18.6% unemployment rate from their total population, making them the most unemployed ethnic group in Belize. The Mestizo are the least affected by unemployment, with a 13.6% rate.

The age group of (14 y.o. to 24 y.o.) is the group found with the most unemployed people, with a 25.3% rate.

The district of Cayo has the highest unemployment rate of 18.2%, while the district of Belize has the lowest unemployment rate of 12.1%.

Sib Announces Results of the April 2012 - Labor Force Survey

The Statistical Institute of Belize conducted a national labor force survey in April 2012 to estimate employment levels in the country. The survey targeted 2,800 randomly selected households countrywide and obtained responses from about 85 percent of them. This amounted to almost ten thousand respondents (9,980). Approximately two-thirds of the respondents were of working age (14 years and over) and of that amount, 65.6 percent were either working or available to work. The remaining 34.4 percent were housewives, students and retirees who were no longer interested in working, and were therefore regarded as not being in the labor force.

Of the respondents who were of working age, 3,583 persons were classified as employed and 598 as unemployed, yielding a national unemployment rate of 14.4 percent. The female unemployment rate (22.3 percent) continued to be more than twice the male unemployment rate (9.1 percent). According to Statistical Institute of Belize records, these are the highest unemployment rates that Belize has experienced since April 1998 when the national rate was 14.3 percent, with similar percentages of males (10.6 percent) and females (21.3 percent) being out of work. Over the past decade, the national unemployment rate in April fluctuated between 9 percent and 13 percent.

As in previous years, young people (14 to 24 years) were most affected by limited job opportunities. During the month of the survey, they experienced almost the exact unemployment rate (25.3 percent) as in April 1998. Their unemployment rate was highest in the Belize (25.9 percent) and Cayo (29.70 percent) districts and lowest, at approximately 22 percent, in the northern districts and Toledo.

The table below provides the unemployment rates, population estimates and composition of the working-age population for the six districts in April 2012. It can be seen that the Cayo District recorded the highest rate of unemployment (18.2 percent) and the Belize District the lowest (12.1 percent). Among the other four districts, Corozal and Stann Creek recorded unemployment rates above the national average and Orange Walk and Toledo below it. Compared to April 2007, it is noteworthy that the unemployment rates in April 2012 were higher in all districts except Toledo. The Corozal and Cayo districts, in particular, saw their unemployment rates more than tripled from 4.1 percent and 5.7 percent, respectively.

Growing at an annual average rate of 3.2 percent over the last five years, the employed population totaled 126,722 in April 2012. Of this figure, 57.2 percent were employed by private businesses and other non-government entities, 12.3 percent by the public sector, 26.7 percent self-employed and 3.6 percent were unpaid family workers. The median monthly income per worker was $886, compared to $772 five years ago.
