Where am I going to buy a local phone on Ambergris?
Or what can I bring down to have converted for my island phone?

Rent a phone from Dianne at Quicksilver Messenger Service. She has an ad on Tacogirl with her phone # and email address. I get one everytime I come down.

I had my US carrier unlock my phone (free), then bought a SIM card in Belize (~$25US). I buy pre-paid credit as needed, often on the days with double/triple credit. I can retrieve messages from my US phone if & when I want, and a select few people I give my Belizean number. It's the cheapest solution I've found. One little wrinkle: if the BZE phone is inactive for more than 3 months, the SIM card becomes useless. So, if I'm away longer than that I have someone top me up a little.

If your phone takes a card, you can have your regular phone unlocked and put a Digicell card in it while you are here. Then when you go back to the States, I think as long as you phone your Belize number you can keep your phone active. I will ask a couple of friends, I think this is the way they do it

When I had to replace my SIM card 2 weeks ago, the ladies at the BTL office told me to call or text my Belize phone every 2 months and that would keep my SIM card from expiring between visits.

You can ask them to not "time out" your phone for non use. Renting a phone is not really only an option if you are not planning on returning from time to time. More expensive than the other options mentioned above...

You can update your phone minutes on line through Marie at Gecko Graphics for as little as $5US per month. You will have kept your number active and have a balance so that your phone is usable as soon as you hit the ground.

That is my plan exactly. Buy a few dollars quarterly and be ready to fly at landing.
