My wife and I are going to AC in August for 2 weeks, is it necessary to get a Malaria vaccination if doing day trips to the ruins or jungle? When I booked the flight American Airlines said that it is recommended but not necessary. Thanks!

NO it is not necessary. Search this site for "malaria" if you want info and opinions on this issue.

THANKS! Never had to get one before, was wondering why I would in Belize ( I mean these aren't the jungles of the Congo!). Great site, great info! Thanks again.

There is no such thing as a malaria "vaccination". You are going to be fine in Belize, but here is a bit of info on malaria for future reference. In areas where there is the risk of malaria, a traveler takes a type of pill that provides "passive protection" from malaria. There are many types of malaria, and one needs to take the medication that is specific to the strain they will encounter. The more frequently one is bit by infected mosquities, the more likely one is to become sick. The pills one takes for passive protection can have side effects like nausea, or in the case of the medication called "larium" (for the worst of the worst strains of malaria, found in cities in Africa)some people have psychotic episodes. There is malaria from time to time in Belize, but rarely in the jungle, as the type of mosquito that carries the disease is a city-bug, not a country-bug. There is a malaria control office in Belize (who have obviously done a great job!), and the officers there are both knowledgeable and helpful. So ........ relax in Belize, but take the subject of malaria very seriously if you intend to hang out in Brazaville, Congo - over there it can kill you.
